This necessarily decreases a bit of the mysterious opacity of early Batman and makes him feel more like a jolly prankster than a tortured vigilante. The most notable difference between pre-Crisis Earth-Two Wayne and his newer post-Crisis Earth-2 incarnation is that the post-Crisis Earth-2 Joker learned the real identities of Robin and the Huntress after turning Gotham DA Harvey Simms into the new Two-Face (Harvey knowing Helena's identity already). It was later revealed that the current heroes live on a parallel world to the Golden Age heroes: The newer Silver Age heroes are on "Earth-One", while the older Golden Age characters reside on "Earth-Two" (the numbering does not indicate any hierarchy of parallel Earths, only the number by which they were discovered). He was briefly succeeded in the role of Batman by his former junior partner, Dick Grayson, after Wayne retired.The first Batman is nonetheless very much a study in contradictions and reflects the still-forming identity and personality of the character. And yet, how can I read ancient Batman comics and not share all of the little treasures inside in hopes of some future traveler one day finding them and doing a little chuckle. Wayne decided to permanently retire from the role; Cernak would be later stopped by Helena Wayne, who became the Huntress . Specific dates and common sense are usually given precedence over cover dates (for example, a story set at Christmastime can be presumed to take place in December even if the cover date says March-April!

Among the series being renumbered were Action Comics and Detective Comics, which had previously retained their original numbering since the 1930s. The Earth-Two Doctor Fate later removes the memory of the battle from the consciousness of the general public, so as to protect the secret identities of Robin and the Huntress, which were also thus exposed, and causing everyone to believe instead that Wayne died of cancer at home on the same day that Batman died.

Batman's relationship with the Gotham City PD changed for the worse with the events of " Batman: Officer Down" and " Batman: War Games/War Crimes". And while there are decades of different takes on his character, OG Joker does feel brimming with a barely contained violence where many modern incarnations give him a kind of poised glee in the midst of chaos.

But The Joker’s MO in these first issues is straight up murder, maybe with a theft involved, but he’s plotting to kill multiple people in the first issue alone.The bloodthirsty biographies of the world’s most infamous pirates are reproduced in this Folio edition of Captain Charles Johnson’s renowned work, including original woodcut illustrations and a fascinating introduction by Margarette Lincoln. Batman’s popularity has earned him his own dedicated magazine, a quarterly with its first issue released in Spring 1940. Long-running subplots dealt with corporate intrigues at the Wayne Foundation as well as Bruce/Batman's romances with Vicki Vale, Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and the sort-of villain Nocturna. Earth-One: The original pre-Crisis parallel Earth that was the home of the Justice League of America and the Silver Age/Bronze Age versions of various DC characters like the Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman. A few of those adventures may also have taken place on Earth-Two, but only if their events can reasonably be reconciled with Earth-Two continuity.

Young Bruce was deeply affected by the deaths of his parents and decided to spend his life avenging himself and others against criminals. established that at least some of the events of the radio series also took place on Earth-Two, those appearances are included in this chronology, although some aspects of the radio series continuity are at odds with both that of Earth-Two and that of the contemporary comic books.

Batman proved a hit character and received his own solo title in 1940, while continuing to star in Detective Comics.
