About this deal

I think it really shows beautifully how society is where the limitations lie, not with disabilities! Challenge your preconceptions of disability and mental health” - this book promises to do just that.

I know that she was dealing with word-count constraints and writing a book for children, but in some cases, it seemed like she wasn't being completely forthcoming about people's trauma and suffering. I am impressed with how educational and moving this book is without ever becoming didactic or saccharine, and recommend it as a great resource for individual readers and schools. I Am Not A Label” is a wonderful collection of brilliant minds, illustrated in the most wonderful way possible, fun to read and filled with power and knowledge.Gary Lau grew up in a broken family, dropped out of school and was, for a period in his life, influenced by peers involved in crime. All of this knowledge is power for young people reading, particularly for disabled young people, being armed with an arsenal of capable people to look up to that they can identify with.

If there are any words in the book that you’re not sureabout, there is a glossary at the end to help. This book weaves together critical studies of Singaporean films, compelling personal reflections, and analysis of the contemporary socio-political discourse. There were familiar faces as well as some I didn’t know, which makes the book all the more readable. In reading this title, kids can read about those who are well known, from Beethoven to Frida Kahlo to Stephen Hawking to Helen Keller and many more.

I actually had to google one or two of my best guesses for figures I wasn't familiar with so I'd actually know who it was talking about and have that information attached to the correct person. I am not a Label is a biographical collection about artists, thinkers, athletes, and activists with disabilities, and just as it is also non-fiction aimed at children, adults will also love the project. It was SMU’s 15th anniversary, and, more importantly, Singapore’s 50th anniversary as an independent nation. I got this as an ARC from NetGalley, but it's one I hope to add to my personal library, and I know I'll be requesting that my public library add a copy. My only critique of the work is that some of the fonts make it difficult to read the names of the people.

There are so many layers of representation within these pages that it’s hard to list them all: we see different kinds of disabilities, including physical, mental-health, and invisible struggles like fibromyalgia; figures from varied cultures, identities, genders (trans heroes!
