Containing one bottle each of shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in treatment, this kit is made for those with natural hair and suffer from light thinning. Salesy, right? Definitely. But it actually delivers on these points in terms of treating men and women’s thinning hair. And even though I felt a little silly using something ‘designed to strengthen, nourish and repair thinning hair from its foundation’ when I had no hair at all, I soldiered on. Apply the Nioxin scalp therapy conditioner. After shampooing, apply a small amount of the conditioner to your hair, focusing on the scalp. Leave it on for 1-3 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.

Hi Sue, thanks for your comment and I’m sorry to hear about the experience you’re having. I haven’t heard about that particular side effect but it’s possible you might be having a reaction to some of its botanical ingredients – have a look at this post where I go into the potential side effects in more detail. Can I ask (if you’re comfortable sharing) whether you have alopecia also, or are you simply using Nioxin for thinning hair? Also, how long have you been using the products for? It’s possible that since Nioxin works to remove excess sebum from the scalp, your initial reaction is a build-up in this area instead. It may clear after 2 weeks once you get used to the new product. Another situation, if you are experiencing alopecia, that you might be going through the kind of adult acne that’s present in certain types of alopecia. My advice is to give Nioxin a couple of weeks to adjust and then if you’re still unhappy, to visit your dermatologist.
