About this deal

Each decodable book has been carefully crafted to help children to build on their secure phonic knowledge, moving confidently from decoding words to reading fluently and for pleasure. I know they all develop differently etc etc but just keen to have a broad idea if DD is where she should be for her age. Parents will also be invited to attend a phonics meeting with the Phonics Leader in the Autumn Term. By the end of Year 1, children will have been taught all of the phonemes and graphemes in the English language and should be able to decode and read any word.

We all use the same language, routines and resources to teach children to read so that we lower children’s cognitive load. Teachers will ensure children have a balance of skills across the week and over each term so that they have opportunities to develop their complete reading skills. Our Phonics Book Bag Readers series includes a wide selection of diverse and inclusive stories, accompanied by bright and contemporary illustrations that will engage and inspire young readers. The books feature an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction to foster a love of reading in all children. We aim to promote reading for pleasure, and hope to instil this love of reading in all children through the culture of our school. This could be by showing pictures or objects with the sound in and getting the children to guess or find the sound.

If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. They also assess when children are ready to exit the Rapid Catch-up programme, which is when they read the final fluency assessment at 90+ words per minute. and the books are an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction to foster a love of reading in all children.

Year 1 class teachers will hold a meeting for parents in the Spring term to ensure that parents feel confident in supporting their children during the phonics screening check. At Broomfield, we also model the application of the alphabetic code through phonics in shared reading and writing, both inside and outside of the phonics lesson and across the curriculum. We have a strong focus on language development for our children because we know that speaking and listening are crucial skills for reading and writing in all subjects.

These children urgently need to catch up, so the gap between themselves and their peers does not widen. The school I teach at swapped to little wandle at the start of the year and we've had to reorganise, give away and purchase new books. It is our intention to ensure that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils (including those with SEND) are able to read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education by ensuring all children have the appropriate word reading and comprehension skills. This program is well resourced with fully decodable books and assessment tools that ensure that children are kept on track by identifying any gaps early on. They will practice decoding the words in the book and will discuss the meaning of any new words before reading.
