About this deal

If only there were a single, streamlined product we could point new players to, a concise entry point that explained the rules, introduced the setting, and made it all effortless to learn and play. Something that showcased what makes this fantasy RPG unique. Oh wait, now there is..."— Andrew Logan Montgomery. A Rough Landing” is another learning scenario. It is written for 3-6 players and playable in one session, putting it in the pole position. This scenario takes place shortly after “The Battle of Dangerford” and, like the SoloQuest, serves as a great way to teach the rules, Glorantha, and other game elements. A look into the past of the dark future Cyberpunk Red follows on from Mike Pondsmith's classic Cyberpunk 2020, and takes place before video game Cyberpunk 2077. Image: R. Talsorian Games Throughout “The Battle of Dangerford,” the rules are explained with just the right level of detail. Passages are often framed by cultural information, customs, and rites that are difficult for new RuneQuest players to tease out of the core book. Their use is on point, driving home specific rules while teaching about Glorathan culture. everything down into the four books, the RuneQuest Starter Set never threatens to overwhelm, easing them into

A Fire in the Darknesssees the adventurers asked to investigate a string of fires in Jonstown. Clues lead them to the under-city tunnels in search of the source of the blaze— is it possible that the prime suspects are not what they seem?

In A Rough Landing, fresh from the Battle of Dangerford, the adventurers run afoul of aggressive dark trolls, and must resolve a problem in a nearby farming community. The RuneQuest Starter Set comes in a dense sturdy box which weighs two-and-a-half pounds! It designed to introduce new players and new Game Masters to RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha to that end includes all of the rules necessary to play the content in the RuneQuest Starter Set, provides an introduction to Glorantha and the area where the three scenarios it comes with are set, fourteen pre-generated adventurers, a sheaf of handouts and play aids, and a set of polyhedral dice. The latter come in an appropriately bronze colour since RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha is a Bronze Age roleplaying game, but whilst they both fetching and obvious as soon as you open the box, they are not the starting point for the RuneQuest Starter Set. No, that would be the cover sheet, which in turn yells out ‘Read Me First!’ and ‘What’s In Book 4: Adventures: Three adventures and adventure seeds for further adventures. Includes A Rough Landing, A Fire in the Darkness, and The Rainbow Mounds. The RuneQuest Starter Set allows players to easily immerse themselves into Glorantha and its system, with ready-to-use characters and ready-to-play adventures allowing for many hours of play. There is no better way to learn about the game and world than this starter set. Once we get into the Magic chapter, things become quite shortened compared to the core rulebook. Only spells and rules needed by the adventurers are described, and everything else gets a hint or short write-up, nudging you to get the core rulebook if you want to know more. The material on the Spirit World and Shamanism is short, since neither the adventures of Book 4 nor the pre-generated adventurers would have much to do with it, but there’s enough to whet a new player’s appetite. I really appreciate that because these are some of the game elements that set RuneQuest and Glorantha apart for me. Book 2: The World of Glorantha

Cyberpunk Red’s first boxed set came out as a preview to capitalise on the excitement of new Cyberpunk after so, so long. We love the new presentation so much and think players will too, so we’re including a few blank character folios for those who wish to create new adventurers using this style of adventurer sheet. Each RuneQuestadventurer is unique, defined by their Runes, culture, and cult—all chosen by the player. What's Inside If you’re old school (like me) and prefer to have pen and paper in hand when facing RPG dangers solo, you can get The Battle of Dangerford as part of the newly newly released RuneQuest Starter Set, published in 2021. The RuneQuest Starter Set is a fantastic product... One of Chaosium’s goals was to make this product useful even for veterans of RuneQuest and Glorantha, and I think they have greatly succeeded here.

Things Lurking in the Dark

Maximal Bronze Age Fantasy – RuneQuest has stood the test of time… because it offers something different than standard medieval fantasy fare."

What if D&D took its cues from mythologies rather than pulp fantasy? That’s the question at the heart of RuneQuest, the critically-acclaimed RPG from game design legend Greg Stafford. RuneQuest offers a chance to play mythic heroes seeking adventure in a deep setting like few other RPGs. This is just a superficial review, and mainly on the typography, graphical and general look of the material as I haven't had the time to completely read it through and play it yet. First of all: I am as Swede, so sorry for any typos or other grammatical or language error in this text. Thank you Chaosium that you continue to develop this wonderful game! The absolute perfect starter set that comes in a box... there are several wonderful starter sets out there but this is going to set a new high as to what it provides." — OrcusDorkus. Beset by war, the heroes of Glorantha ready themselves for their greatest challenge, the looming threat of the Hero Wars, an apocalyptic battle that will shape the fate of the world for all of time. To show themselves worthy, heroes adventure and strive against Chaos and their former enemies, the Lunar Empire. While not a starter set, this boxed set has everything a GM might need to start up their own fantasy hexcrawl game. The rules are slim and player-facing while still familiar to anyone that’s played Dungeons & Dragons.

The rules presented here in the Starter Set distill the rules from the core book. There are no new rules introduced. However, how the rules are presented, the clarity, and copious examples, set this rule book apart from the core book. DISCLAIMER: I was involved as a proofreader in this product's development and received a complimentary copy from Chaosium. Return to Dragon Pass with The Red Cow Campaign by Ian Cooper, Jeff Richard, and Greg Stafford by James Davis Nicoll (2020)It's got a dash of Conan The Barbarian, a little bit of Greek mythology, and it has a really fun rules system that's actually been used in a tonne of different games." As outlined in my initial Design Diary post, we had several main goals with the RuneQuest Starter Set. Firstand foremost was to make it a wholly accessible product for newcomers to RuneQuest and the world of Glorantha. But another important goal is to make sure the Starter Set also has value to our already-established player base. Too many starter sets are throwaway items or are of no use to veteran players. Not this one!
