( August 2016) The character has no name besides "The Cat." He is the humanoid descendant of a modern house cat called Frankenstein, who had been Lister's pet cat. The cat society ( Felis sapiens) left Red Dwarf seeking the promised land ("Waiting for God"-S1,E4), leaving behind those who were too ill or old to travel. The Cat is the son of the cripple and the idiot. Ace Rimmer, Rimmer's ( Chris Barrie) better looking heroic alternate self, from Dimension Jump and Emohawk: Polymorph II makes a rescue attempt on a captured princess. Although he succeeds in rescuing her, Ace takes a fatal bullet hit. Meanwhile on Starbug, Lister ( Craig Charles) is tired of taking cold showers, nearly using all the water supplies in the process, so he goes into the artificial reality machine with his book of cheats. He challenges the King's best knight so he can win the honour of spending a night and a day with the Queen of Camelot. Using his cheat codes he defeats the knight, claims his prize and with one last cheat the Queen's chastity belt falls freely to the ground. Lister and the Queen then proceed to make love, with an interruption by Lister asking for whipped cream from the astounded crowd and King. Ace is described in the Red Dwarf script book Primordial Soup as being "devilishly handsome, blond-haired" and "Tom Cruise, James Bond and Flash Gordon all rolled into one".

It would be a few years later until I would truly open myself up to admitting my mistakes, but now it underpins my approach to life and work. Mishaps occur, that’s fine, it’s what you do next and what you learn from them that matters. Hopefully that means that my relationships, unlike that fated lunch, won’t turn into a smoking kipper! Before dying, this Ace asked the Rimmer aboard Starbug to take on the mantle. Rimmer was reluctant at first as he didn't want to be the smug, self-satisfied version of himself that he had always despised, but after some teasing from Lister that he could never do it, Rimmer was finally convinced. Ace then passed away. The Red Dwarf Rimmer finally became Ace, letting Kryten and Cat think that "Arnold Rimmer" had died on the pretense of it being the real Rimmer, and holding a funeral for him.

This episode featured a large number of famous guest actors. Scottish-born Hollywood movie veteran Brian Cox played the Medieval English King while British comedy actress Sarah Alexander portrayed his French Queen. English actor Ken Morley portrayed the German commander Captain Voorhese. British television actress Alison Senior portrayed Princess Bonjella. With the help of Lister, Rimmer passes himself off as Ace (nearly), and they hold a funeral for their shipmate. When Rimmer reveals he is still nervous, Lister follows up on a promise he made Ace and they follow the coffin to a planet with a ring made of billions of coffins, showing the number of Rimmers who succeeded in becoming Ace and passing the flame, causing Lister to ask if he'll be the one to 'break the chain'. After a few weeks, Rimmer fully accepts his role as Ace and says his goodbye to the crew before leaving Starbug. The German base scene was filmed at RAF Northolt, and the medieval scenes were filmed at Newark Priory. These three achievements refer to the Iron Throne, a large throne in the fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire made from many swords fused together with dragonfire.
In the first Red Dwarf novel, the captain is a woman named " Kirk" and in the pilot for the unaired American version of the show the captain is a woman named "Tau". Selby and Chen are played by David Gillespie and Paul Bradley, [10] respectively. Chen works in the ship's kitchens and both spend their time drunk. First appearing in the pilot episode, they spend most of their free time with Lister and Petersen getting drunk. Like the rest of the crew they are killed in the radiation leak. When the crew are resurrected in Series VIII, Selby and Chen are the first crew members the regular characters encountered. They have not been seen again.
Hollister is the captain of the interplanetary mining vessel, the Red Dwarf. He is seen in the first episode, in which he sentences Dave Lister to eighteen months in stasis for bringing his unquarantined cat on board. When Lister is released, Hollister, along with the rest of the crew, have been dead dust for three million years. According to " Thanks for the Memory", Yvonne McGruder was the ship's female boxing champion, and the only woman Rimmer ever had sex with while he was alive. She is mentioned in a number of episodes, but her only on-screen appearance is inside a simulation in " Better Than Life", where she is played by Judy Hawkins.
Going solo for Series VII had worried Doug Naylor. To help him with the writing duties he hired a small group of writers. Paul Alexander, a Jasper Carrott writing regular, was the first one to help out. This was a new situation to Naylor having previously had control over every script. He would however re-write and edit each script to make them fit into the Red Dwarf's creative pedigree. [2] Rimmer's mother, played by Kalli Greenwood, is referred to several times in the series, not altogether consistently. In " Polymorph" (S3,E3), Rimmer describes her affectionately as "prim and proper", almost austere but with no time for fools. Yet in " The Last Day" (S3,E6), he indicates that she was overly sexually promiscuous. In " Dimension Jump" she is briefly shown as a mother who is concerned for her son's upbringing and education but is insensitive to his feelings (for example, lecturing him about his situation at school while he is hanging upside down as the result of a mean prank by his brothers, rather than help him down first). However there is always the upside, my family laughing and joking about my Dad being a secret agent like 007 or the presents we get, just recently Mum got a real Kangaroo fur bag, I got an Australian hat, and my brother got some Kangaroo jerky, which is apparently tasty. And the upside for Dad is, he has traveled the world, he’s in america for two weeks and he’s travelling around so much, he’s also met the worlds tallest man, who unfortunately was only half a tall man on the picture my Dad has, as my Dad is quite a short-ass! They ejected Ace's Light Bee coffin and Starbug followed it on its planned course through a Wormhole. Ace had told Rimmer to follow it, as what he would find there would convince him to also become Ace.I believe in embracing our mistakes and embarrassments, we create space for growth, empathy, and connection.
