At the end of the notebook, there's a place where you and your tutees can write any relevant notes. How can I support children with their 11 Plus vocabulary? It is important not to neglect the other parts of the eleven plus exam because even children with a very strong vocabulary will struggle in the test without proper practice and work on the other sections of the 11 Plus. Of course, learning 11 plus vocabulary is just one part of preparing for this exam, and it's important to fit in lots of practise before each individual test. Why is vocabulary development so difficult to deliver? The notebook has four sections that can be filled in. The first includes a list of vocabulary words recommended for the 11 Plus, and space for children to write which part of speech it belongs to, its definition, and an example of how it would be used in a sentence.

Following this, there's a calendar where a word a day can be filled in. You could add in a word from the list on each day, then have children fill in the details for that word in the first section. There's also another section where children can write synonyms and antonyms for the words, developing their understanding further. Whichever method you choose to use, you should encourage your child to make sentences using the word that are grammatically accurate (a noun used as a noun, a verb as a verb, etc) and that use the word in the correct semantic context. Once the child’s usage of the word is completely secure, you can move on to the next one. This advanced vocabulary will help children during the reading comprehension and writing parts of the 11 Plus assessments, allowing them to flex their knowledge. You could introduce children to one word a day to build up their vocabulary pool gradually. Vocabulary testing within English Papers– Often these papers (particularly for Independent School entry) will include vocabulary tests (sometimes based on a piece of text). Play word gamesIt is also equally important to learn the words that are frequently repeating in the exam. These words are called 11+ Essential Vocabulary Words.
