I can't stress enough how brilliant this book would be to read young boys and girls as an epic bedtime story. Foreman was commended for the annual Greenaway Medal by the Library Association, recognising the year's best-illustrated children's book by a British subject. Being Scandinavian (and having an intense passion for vikings when I was little), my mother bought this book for me when I was learning how to read.

My favourite character from the book was Eric because he was the most bravest and he didn't fall for tricks. When a poison tide flowing across the ocean threatens their island, Roz works with the resident creatures to ensure that they will have clean water, but the destruction of vegetation and crowding of habitats jeopardize everyone’s survival. Aud, who witnessed Snorri's murder and was able to recover the mouthpiece, sounds the first note on the Horn.

As Erik and his brave band of men adventure forth their courage, strength, skill, wit and intelligence will be tested to the utmost. To start, in an alternate ending to the previous episode, Principal Krupp ends up in prison (“…a lot like being a student at Jerome Horwitz Elementary School, except that the prison had better funding”). Robot Roz undertakes an unusual ocean journey to save her adopted island home in this third series entry. Aud has warned the Vikings that should blood ever be shed upon Hy-Brasil, the entire island would sink beneath the waves. Includes an exclusive foreword from Terry Jones and newly coloured illustrations from Michael Foreman.

The magic sword, golden goblets and other treasures Erik won mattered less to both of us than this 30 year old pile of pages. Please consider expanding the lead to provide an accessible overview of all important aspects of the article. Along the way they encounter the Old Man of the Sea, whom they outwit three times, a dragon, a magic sword, enchanters, assorted monsters and mythical beasts, and even Death. They are dismayed to find that Halfdan and his soldiers have arrived before them and are holding the villagers captive. We had just visited an exhibition of Vikings in the British Museum, so I asked him if he would like a story about Vikings and he said yes.

Signed first printing of this collection of fantastic tales following a young Viking, inspired by Nordic folklore and mythology - a runner-up for the Kate Greenaway Medal. His own books include the classics War Boy and War Game , winners of the Kate Greenaway Award and Smarties Book Prize respectively. Erik sounds the second note to awaken the gods, and he and his crew climb a path made of stars to approach the great Hall of Valhalla.

Maroon cloth boards bumped to the corners, otherwise covers and contents clean, binding tight and square. One story memorably shows that courage and strength are not always useful if unaccompanied by wisdom, and that a leader needs the latter more than the former. At that age it seemed monstrous to me, almost like a text book, but it was filled with beautiful illustrations, so I didn't mind.
