About this deal

These are the experiment results catalogued for those who have “problem” colours which they are attempting to change by overdyeing. If you are going to attempt to overdye navy blue, I would still avoid those which have any purple hints within the navy (a sign there is some red present) and the colour could turn muddy. I also suggest that you may need to go through the process twice since you can’t judge the colour when the fabric is wet as it is so dark. How to Cool Down Orange For best results, dampen the fabric prior to application of the fabric dye using a spray bottle. This will aid the absorption and provide a more even coverage. For stubborn fibres use the Fabric Dye in conjunction with our penetrating solution, Colour Boost. This should be mixed in a 2:1 ratio, of Dye to Colour Boost. Beige – almost any “antiqued” version of a color can be created from a beige base. Neons are unlikely, but you can use a dusty pink using a bit of red dye, a mossy green using some spring green dye, etc. Beige is similar to mixing a very light brown, it will tone down any dye color slightly and make it appear slightly muddy and less intense.

Many garments have special pleats and features that are heat-set to keep their shape forever. If you use heat to dye these items, it can damage these features and the garment itself. After preparing your dye and your fabric, you can go ahead with dyeing your polyester green as needed. How To Dye Polyester To A Pastel Shade A dark fabric cannot be dyed a lighter color. You might be able to dye a colored fabric if your dye is a darker hue, but the results will be a blend of the dye and the color already on your curtains. Since the results can be unpredictable, completely removing the original color is a safer approach. Also, when over-dyeing a used cloth, don’t forget to take care of the stains. First, you need to carefully pre-wash them and apply some stain removal treatment. It is possible to dye over patterned fabric, but the print itself may turn into unexpected colors, or stay the same color, depending on how it was printed. Pay attention to the type of pattern your fabric has before you decide whether it’s a good candidate for overdyeing. Printed fabrics – things like floral sheets or polka-dot dresses, are usually printed (or yarn-dyed) using a pigment dye that absorbs into the fabric. When you overdye this fabric, each existing, original color will mix with the overdye. For example, if your original fabric is pink with yellow flowers that have green leaves and you add it to a red dye bath – the fabric will become red (or reddish pink) with orange flowers and muddy brownish leaves. This may or may not be the result you’re going for, so think about how the dye will mix with each individual color before you commit to overdyeing.

Protein fibers are those that are made from protein and are usually the hair of animals: wool, angora, mohair, cashmere, as well as silk. Silk(including soy silk) is the only non-hair animal fiber and can be dyed like wool or like cellulose fibers. The higher pH of dyes used for cellulose can be destructive to animal hair fibers. If you have read through the guide you should now know everything you need to make the right choice in a fabric dye. The list below includes several types of the best fabric dyes on the market. Use double the usual amount of dye for projects using dark colours and bright colours. Get the most colour intensity when you use the hottest water possible for your fabric (example: use the stove top dyeing method, heat water with a kettle or use 140°F water). Neutralize Bright Fabric When Over-Dyeing Darker Why’s that? Well, that’s because different dyes have different constituents and different pigmentations, which makes them behave differently. They may absorb, reject, or overall interact with the base color in different ways. If you are unsure about the color mixing, you can always test a small batch of dye with a scrap piece of fabric to see if you like the result before moving ahead! How To Dye Polyester Green

How to Overdye Difficult Colours

Please note that the originals are really the same. This was very difficult to photograph! How to Warm Up White If you have a polyester blend with less than 35% polyester (or other synthetic materials), you can safely use the Rit DyeMore dye for natural fabric instead.

Fabric Paints: While not exactly an actual dye, fabric paints can be a great alternative to adding color to fabrics when success with dyes is minimal or not really achievable. In other cases – like an old high school t-shirt or hoodie – the printing is done using screen printing ink which (in most cases) has a polymer base and sits on the surface of the shirt. This ink can sometimes absorb polyester dyes, but it won’t absorb dyes meant for cotton, silk, or wool. This means that if you overdye a yellow shirt with a red print on it in blue dye, the result will be a green shirt with the same red print. As with any overdye project, if you’re aiming for a particular color on a garment like this, it’s always best to test first! Although a dye may not absorb into a polymer-based ink, it may lightly stain the ink enough to be noticeable. Tips for overdyeing t-shirts, hoodies, and jeans:If the garment you are planning to dye has a light color and you are looking to dye it a darker color: Then all we recommend doing is following the standard instructions for how to use Rit All-Purpose Dye. If you are trying to get as dark of a color as possible, please also read our tips on how to get the darkest color possible. Add your color remover to the water, and mix it well with stainless steel tongs. Depending on how heavy your fabric is, you can use a suitable amount of color remover as recommended by the box. Note that the result likely won’t be as colorfast as you expect, and the dye will likely bleed in subsequent washes. If you want to go for a more permanent result, disperse dye is still the way to go. 3. Acrylic Paint
