Of the many things that I take quite seriously in my beauty routine, nail polish topcoat is one of them. Manicured nails and groomed brows are two things that make me feel normal. So needless to say, I was struggling when salons were closed. But I used the time to perfect my at-home manicure skills, and after months, I think found exactly what gets me as close to pro-gel look without the annoyance of getting it on and off: this year's Allure Best of Beauty winner, the Essie Gel Setter Top Coat. Start squeaky clean.Thoroughly cleanse the nail with polish remover prior to application. It should be gently scrubbed, including around the sidewall of the nail and cuticle area and under the free edge (oil left under the free edge will cause your capped, sealed tips to chip). Start with ridge filling. This primer helps even out the nail surface, which in turn will help level the polish applied on top. This is especially helpful if you’re using a sheer shade or a chalky pastel. Base coats and top coats are created with the a specific colour formula in mind. For optimal wear and shine results, use essie base and top coat with essie colour. While some other brands’ formulas may be compatible with essie, results are not assured. These are stainless steel mixing balls to help mix the colour and ensure it stays at the right consistency for a fluid, flawless application.

Wrap the tips. Cap and seal the free edge to prevent chipping and shrinkage at the tip of the nail. To do this, remove most of the polish from the brush, then tap it across the free edge of the nail. Do this for every layer—base, both color coats, and top coat. This will “wrap” the free edge of the nail in longer-lasting color. Aging of polish ingredients may cause color to fade, yellow, or shift over time—discard any bottles that have been opened more than 2 years (or that are unopened but have been stored for more than 2 years).
