About this deal

I saw a 10-week-old puppy recently with a malocclusion that was mild enough to consider “ball therapy.” This is one of those rare prescriptions that is inexpensive, enjoyable, and effective when used for the right patients. They may be gentle giants, but large breeds need bigger, sturdier ball toys that can hold up to their strong jaws. The Tug-n-Toss Jolly Ball comes in an X-large size for dogs over 90 pounds. (Three smaller sizes also accommodate a range of other breed sizes.) Ball Therapy involves the use of a removable, passive-force orthodontic appliance in the form of an appropriately sized pliable ball toy or a Kong® Classic™ toy. The concept is amazingly simple. The owners encourage the dog to hold/carry the ‘appliance’ as much as possible, holding it in the mouth just behind the canine teeth. The presence of the ball will apply a gentle force on the lower canines out towards the lips and encourage these teeth to tip into proper position as they are erupting. Case Selection and Timing Figure 5: A small ball in the same dental model as in Figure 4. This ball is too small and sits between the lower canines without applying appropriate outward force. There are a lot of options in this category ( KONG and Orbee-Tuff also make popular rope-ball toys), but we like the Jolly Pets rope ball for its durability. It’s puncture-resistant, gentle on dog mouths, and a solid choice for tug-of-war and pups who like to grab and shake.

Made from non-toxic rubber, they’re easy to stuff with treats (or peanut butter) to increase your dog’s interest. Though nothing truly replaces brushing your pup’s teeth, veterinary dental specialists agree that textured toys like these balls can play a part in your dog’s dental health. Radiograph left lower canine before (left) and immediately after (right) surgery. Note the immature morphology of the canine teeth - thin walls and open root apices. After interviewing many owners who attributed their dog’s damaged teeth to a plastic herding ball, we noticed a trend. Dogs that experienced teeth issues herded the ball with their teeth. The intention of the procedure is to keep the pulp alive and allow the shortened lower canines to develop normally and contribute to the strength of the lower jaws. While herding dogs can still be found on farms, they are most commonly found in suburban homes. I don’t know the last time you stepped foot in the suburbs, but I’ll tell you right now homes do not have rolling acreage for dogs to roam or sheep to chase. It is important to realise and inform the owner that any of our domesticated pets can have very functional dentition after the loss of any tooth or teeth. Let your dog play with the ball or toy. The rubber ball or toy will be most effective when your dog plays with it for at least 15 minutes, three times a day. To encourage your dog to play with the ball or toy, give it to your dog as a special treat for good behavior. You could also put some tasty treats in the Kong toy and use it as a food puzzle. My only complaint is that the Push-n-Play is not suitable for indoor use. This heavy plastic herding ball is like a bowling ball as it rolls around your floor, crashing into chair legs and off walls. Outdoor play only. All up, we tested over 11 different herding balls, spending dozens of hours watching our hyperactive dogs chase them around the yard. tri ball), where dogs herd large balls into a pen. As per the rules, a herding ball should be taller than your dog’s shoulders.

Ball therapy is a treatment used to attempt correct linguoverted mandibular canines (base narrow canines). At its core ball therapy is an orthodontic treatment where the appliance is removable, and fun to play with! As with any intervention, proper case selection is essential to success. Ball Therapy is intended to help guide the eruption of the lower adult canine teeth in dogs whose jaw-length relationship is normal or close to it. It will not work for dogs with significant class II or class III malocclusions. Also, there must be a clear path from where the lower canines are to where we want them to be and there must be sufficient space to accommodate the crowns of the lower canines in the space between the upper 3rd incisor and upper canine tooth as depicted in the VetDentEdu logo. The owner needs to encourage play with the ball several times a day (6 - 8) or as often as they will tolerate with a short attention span. The ball should be only at the front of the mouth to go any good. If there are no positive results in six weeks a further veterinary evaluation is advised. Our Jolly Mega Ball finally met its end when our Great Dane tester attempted to jump on top of it, scratching hard in the process. But for the 10 minutes he did get to play with it, he had the time of his life.Available in three sizes and three versions with different sounds, the Babble Ball is noted for being tougher and longer-lasting than rubber or soft plastic interactive balls. Because of its strength, however, it should only roll on the ground. So no throwing, bouncing, or tossing for this dog ball.
