About this deal

It's not for young kids, as there is some violence and the themes would probably go over their heads anyway. A complete break from what he usually does, there is nevertheless the telltale Horwood style, the way of stringing words together that leaves you captivated into the wee hours of the morning. There are no less than six or seven books in the series - but the first trilogy is most worth while. We learn over the course of the book that there are reasons for Mandrake's ability to be so cruel - his upbringing on the wild slopes of Siabod bred him that way - but Rune is pure evil. The plot evolves and characters grow learn and die while a supporting cast are kept interesting enough to add to the story without drowning the main plot.

The first 75 percent of it I loved, I wasn't a massive fan of the last bits but it was still amazing. I would probably read this novel differently now than when I first read it, but my rating reflects my memory of Horwood's book as a life-changing experience.Beware the Nice Ones: Boswell has no qualms about using the Dark Sound to snap Bracken out of a fit of angst and remind him to respect the secrets of the stone. This was recommended to me because I loved Watership Down but the books are very different aside from the obvious small animals. Willows and if you’re one of those people who can’t help but well up when you hear Bright Eyes then this book will have you reaching for the cheap whiskey and razorblades. Bindle, his good friend, still holds faith to the old ways, and with his and Hulver's help, they celebrate the long lost rites of the Stone, with Bracken, Hulver's apprentice, hidden away. Now her son by Tryfan, Lucerne, will consolidate their ascendancy and root and and kill the last followers of the Stone.

Interestingly, the sheer power of the Old Speech when combined with walls of Dark Sound brings it close to being a black speech, despite being the language of the good guys. If you're considering reading it, DO NOT be put off by the idea of it being about moles, within pages you will be hooked. It was followed by two sequels, forming The Duncton Chronicles, and also a second trilogy, The Book of Silence. It's a fantasy adventure with anthropomorphised moles, not dissimilar to Watership Down in many ways. In modern etiquette, this book would have a trigger warning for those occasions when the red in the black \ white\ red morality fears it's head. By destroying all semblance of the religion means that everybody (or everymole as it is written) forgets the tenants of the religion, which means that in the end Mandrake is the one that they all look up to – he is the biggest and the strongest.
