I Want You Now is probably DM's most straightforward song. That made it unexpected, as the meaning of their songs is usually hidden below the surface, and crawl up slowly. But there is absolutely no mistaking what this song is about. I would say that this song is sexuality that drives right to the point, whereas the songs are usually soaked with sensuality that creeps up on you. I'm really not a big fan of Martin Gore's voice, and I think it sums up my problems with this album - it's simply not trying hard enough. It has the ideas and ambition, but falls into the same category as the rest of 80's alternative pop. His voice carries the same melodramatic, overcorrect timbre that I hear too often from this era of music. It's an objectively good singing voice, but that's it. Just like the music, which is trying to be haunted, foggy, and dark, there's no necessary push to make it memorable.

Band members Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore both explained the album's title was conceived as a joke, after Gore found an old album called "Music for the Millions." [9] Fletcher said, "The title's... a bit tongue-in-cheek, really. Everyone is telling us we should make more commercial music, so that's the reason we chose that title." [8] According to Gore, the title "was a joke on the uncommerciality of [the album]. It was anything but music for the masses!" Not to forget 'I Want You Now', one of Gore's beautiful a capella episodes - once again questioning both, time and lust, built on a simplified male-female sigh-snippet - sliding into a spy-like theme, 'To Have And To Hold'; indecipherable radio message giving the impression of voices echoing in one's head, all paranoia with morally induced lyrics. 'Nothing' is another impressive standard which sadly wasn't given a chance as a single - its an effectively negative statement, which indirectly (in terms of lyrics) echoes Gore's spiritual and materialistic doubts, once expressed in 'Everything Counts' and 'Blasphemous Rumours'. The tour began in October 1987 with a European leg, starting in Madrid and finishing mid-November in Paris. In early December, a North American run commenced in San Francisco and culminated three weeks later in New York City.

Release

In January 1988, the group played an eleven-date U.K. tour, which was followed by further dates in Europe beginning in Hamburg, West Germany in early February.
