About this deal

Following the landmark 100 Great Black Britons campaign of 2003, a number of Black historical figures were included on the national school curriculum and had statues and memorials erected and blue plaques put up in their honour.

The competition is sponsored by the National Education Union (NEU) and Kevin Courtney, the NEU's joint general secretary has said: "The NEU supports this competition to celebrate what we have always known: that Britain's history is irrefutably rooted in black and global history". Brilliant informative look at some of the 100 great black Britons of history and the present that highlights a lot of people I had never heard of before. The Festival aims to bring the work of the finest historians to the widest possible audience and enables you to engage with some of today's most popular historians. After the ‘Windrush Generation’ scandal, The killing of George Floyd and the general increase in campaigning by the Black Lives Matter movement I decided it was high time I learned more. Hall, along with Richard Hoggart and Raymond Williams, was one of the founding figures of the school of thought that is now known as British Cultural Studies or The Birmingham School of Cultural Studies.

With the publication of their 100 Great Black Britons, Mr Vernon and his co-author, Dr Angelina Osborne, have relaunched the campaign with an updated list of names and accompanying portraits - including new role models and previously little-known historical figures.

Philippa won much popularity with the English people for her kindness and compassion, which were demonstrated in 1347 when she successfully persuaded King Edward to spare the lives of the Burghers of Calais. I was surprised at how many people mentioned I knew yet didn't know a lot about them at all and of course all of those who have been overlooked at which I've never heard of before. Such inspirational heroes of Caribbean heritage as Walter Tull, Lionel Turpin and William Robson Clarke have been overlooked, yet their stories surely deserve recognition in a list of great Black Britons.
