About this deal

You become more like God and Jesus when you take on their same values and character in your own life. This doesn’t mean you’ll give up who you are to be just like Jesus—after all, God gave you a unique personality that he wants you to use. Rather than changing your personality, you’ll be changing your character to become more Christlike through character development. Warren says it over and over and over again, the purpose of life isn't to learn, or to teach or even to just enjoy life, but to OBEY God. It doesn't matter what your own thoughts are or what you think of yourself, it only matters what the Great Self Appointed Tyrant in the Sky thinks of you and your life. According to this book, your only goal in life is to be forever groveling and praising this God and doing your damnedest to get others to do likewise. Ravi Zacharias (Note: A investigation following Zacharias' death in 2020 found credible evidence of sexual misconduct spanning many years. This was not known at the time of my review in 2007. I cannot recommend his books based on this new information.)

The Purpose Driven Life Book Summary by Rick Warren - Shortform The Purpose Driven Life Book Summary by Rick Warren - Shortform

We have three copies of this book at home. The first was a Christmas gift from an office mate. The second was a retirement gift to my wife by another office mate. The third was the book my daughter bought for herself. I am not sure which one I read but since this book was first published in 2002, it has sold 25 million copies worldwide. I was in a bookstore last week and the latest copy proudly bears 30 million mark. Why did I not read this right away say when we received the first copy of the book at home? I dunno. Just browsing the book gave me then an impression that it was saccharine sweet and was unrealistically all positive that means falsely deceptive.

Anything that brings pleasure to God is called “worship”, and the first purpose of your life is to bring pleasure to God via worship. Music can be a part of worship, but worship is much more than music. Any activity can be transformed into an act of worship so long as you do it for God’s glory and pleasure. There are wonderful benefits to being part of this spiritual family. First, it’s everlasting—having a family on earth is amazing in its own way, but it only lasts as long as your lifetime. On the other hand, your spiritual family not only lasts through this life but also in eternity where you’ll enjoy God’s blessings and rewards together. Second, your spiritual family will never abandon you or stop loving you—you’ll always feel loved and secure in this family. Your ministry is about serving other believers, while your mission is about reaching out to nonbelievers. one of Jesus’ followers is commissioned to continue what he began on earth: to free God’s children from Satan’s power. Share the love of Christ with everyone you encounter in your daily work/life. In the process, you impact their eternal salvation. What do you think is the main motivator driving your life? (For example, “I think that I’m driven by approval-seeking and pressure to be the best at work—I always feel that I should be doing more somehow, to stand out or get recognition.”) Based upon the idea that 40 days is some sort of spiritually significant span of time in God's Daytimer, this book encourages it's readers to embark on a sort of 40-day study into what God's plan is for you...

Being specific with your praises, instead of generalizing your thanks. For example, “I thank you for the interesting conversation I had with my neighbor today.” This book teaches its reader God's five purposes for his or her life on earth: He makes you a member of His family, a model of His character, a magnifier of His glory, a minister of His grace, and a messenger of His Good News to others. The second purpose of your life is unselfishly loving fellow members of God’s family. God created us to be part of a spiritual family that dedicates itself to loving and honoring him—as a believer, you’re not only his child but a sibling to all other past, present, and future believers. In loving your spiritual family, you’ll learn the essential skill of unselfish loving. Unselfish loving means loving others, even when it’s difficult to do so—such as when they’re being rude, it’s inconvenient for you, or they need too much from you.

Living the Purpose-Driven Life

It will urge you to answer God’s call to service even when the call is for something you’re not particularly gifted at. While your main focus is your unique ministry, your second focus is any call to service. Someone without a servant’s heart only responds to calls for their main ministry, and selfishly ignores God’s calls for other types of service.

Your first purpose is worship—bringing pleasure to God. Worship doesn’t only happen when you’re in church. It’s a lifestyle that centers on making God happy. What Makes True Worship? Reason 5: Life is a test and a responsibility. Accepting God’s purpose allows you to reframe the way you see your life.

Spiritual: The basic part of being part of a family of believers is believing. If you believe and accept Jesus, you already have this part achieved.

The Purpose Driven Life

In the third week of your journey, we’ll discuss the second purpose of your life—unselfishly loving fellow members of God’s family. God created us to be part of a family that dedicates itself to loving and honoring him. As a believer, you’re not only his child but a sibling to all other past, present, and future believers. I have read this book three times and it was one of my favorite books. You know what, I read it in the Bible and then I read it again when I was going through divorce and then I read it a third time when I was going through some rough times. For Days 8-13, Warren walks you through various aspects of how you can please God (i) with specific acts of worship, (ii) by offering/surrendering yourself to God fully, (iii) deepening your friendship with Him, and (iv) worshiping him even when he seems far away and unresponsive. These areas are further elaborate in our complete The Purpose Driven Life summary. FULFILLING YOUR 2ND PURPOSE: BEING AN INTEGRAL PART OF GOD’S FAMILY I am concerned that some churches are abandoning Bibles for their studies and studying this book instead. Any book that causes people to take their eyes off God and onto a man made method is a danger. Challies expresses my concerns clearly in this post

Unfortunately, around chapter 7 (I think?) things started to get a little slow. Whether it was the actual book or just me getting bored, I'm not sure. And I guess I'll never know until I find the book and finish it properly. George Thomas Kurian, James D. Smith III, The Encyclopedia of Christian Literature, Volume 2, Scarecrow Press, US, 2010, p. 630 Describe an experience of sympathy in your fellowship. (For example, a member expressed that she was having some trouble in her marriage. Instead of ignoring the issue or saying, “It’s probably not so bad,” your group offered support and validated her feelings.)
