About this deal

Fresh Water For Flowers by Valérie Perrin will provide a reader with many moments of comfort, bliss, and a real reading delight. Taking over care of the cemetery where Léonine lies makes these continuing bonds literal, but there’s a risk that it also commits Violette to death rather than life. She aged out of the system and found work as a bartender where she met her husband, the philanderer and emotionally cruel Philippe Toussaint. Violette’s routine is disrupted one day by the arrival of police chief Julien Seul, wishing to deposit his mother’s ashes on the gravesite of a complete stranger. Perrin's descriptions here too are very well done; when Violette serves a freshly-picked tomato this reader could feel the juice dribbling down a chin.

This story sometimes felt like a song, a fairy tale, a poem and it challenged me to keep up with it. He had no idea his mother knew him at all, and Violette helps him with the rituals and process of his task. The grave Julien is looking for, and his mother’s story of clandestine love, is intertwined with Violette’s own secret past. The cemetery is maintained in a immaculate condition, with Violette growing a bountiful variety of vegetables, selling flowers, cleaning tombs, chatting to the dead, keeping records of the funerals of the dead, and looking after those who visit the cemetery. Disappointing novels are worse than the stinkers because they break your heart for all the wrong reasons.I struggled a bit with the constantly changing timelines but those timelines allow the mystery to unfold slowly. It's then that Violette meets gorgeous, golden-haired twentysomething Phillipe Toussaint and instantly falls in love. I especially loved her musings about her childhood, her marriage, and her daughter - heartbreaking at times, yet hopeful.

You are never quite sure where this book is heading, but you want to go there nonetheless You think that you know the characters and that they know each other, but you don’t , and neither do they. Now an adult, her life has traversed a multitude of obstacles, having experienced many hardships that have shaped her into the solitary individual she is today.Vivid and memorable are the scenes in which the man giving up the caretaker's job, who planted and loves the garden, gently instructs her, and when she's at work in the garden. However in showing characters who were flawed and did extremely dreadful acts, then through examination of their past how they became damaged. Fala za falą, czytelnika ogarnia poruszenie, zaraz rozbawienie, znów wzruszenie, głęboka zaduma… Valérie Perrin napisała opowieść, w której mieszają się słowa francuskich klasycznych piosenek, poetyckich wersów, mniejszych i większych życiowych mądrości, a wszystko to napisane z taką prostotą!
