So far though, the emphasis on story in this one puts it ahead for us… I would give it a 4/5 for that.

Even when fighting against someone particularly buff, defeating that enemy, even by the skin of you teeth, does not feel particularly satisfying. I would have no problems with this, if the combat was more exciting or at least allowed for some interesting decisions to be made as a group. The game is scenario driven, and in each scenario, the players are working together to accomplish a certain goal - whether that is escaping the castle, defeating the house cat, sending a message via a crow, or something else entirely. Everything from the double sided boards to the miniatures are stunning to look at, and it’s clear that a lot of time has been put into making the game the best it could be.While the story and the simplicity of the rules seems to cater to younger gamers, the gameplay seems to be too relaxed to consistently occupy someone’s attention, especially the young active mind. This isn’t a “miniatures game,” but the Mice and Mystics miniatures are top quality and rival those found in more traditional miniatures games. Perhaps it’s the influence of streaming services like Netflix and Prime, but designers seem keen to bring some of that grand narrative experience to the game table, unfolding plot and twists over multiple gaming sessions. I really wish they had someone read through that and realize that the word dawdle sounds awkward when used twice in the same sentence. Where as I wish that there would be more of ‘we have a plan how to sneak through those rat warrior guards, but something went wrong and we have solved it all together by making narratively exciting decisions!

Preemptive Shot - 1 - You may use this ability immediately after new minions are placed on the board. The art is great, the theme is something I can get behind, and the story is enjoyable enough to follow along with. Different chapters will often introduce new rules that have to be followed and not all of them will be repeated in later levels so you’ll often need to have the gameplay chapter book open and ready for reference most of the time. I don’t have kids, so I wasn’t able to comment on that, but I could very much believe that it’s true.Included in this expansion are new plastic figures, cards and counters, as well as a new series of chapters sure to test your mettle!

There are also some minor logic problems, in my opinion, but if I go into detail, I'm concerned that I might spoil part of the story for you. Things like moving through water, falling from one tile to the next, and placement of enemies at the start of the scenario are not detailed enough and are therefore very open to interpretation.

On the cooperative aspect, yes, indeed, players have to work together and can exchange items and cheese (used for levelling up and activating special powers) as well as heal other players, if need be.
