About this deal

Disclaimer: I DNF because I was bored to tears. I struggled in vain to the halfway point before accepting that the time I had already invested in this book was time wasted.

To finish it off, for a book that claims this hotshot author has been "Talking with Psychopaths" I have to quote from the pen of the master: I loved that this book covered less well-known serial killers; usually, these books just examine the same few famous serial killers. I was really excited to learn about these killers I didn’t know much about; especially the non-American killers. One of my issues with this book was that even though it featured lesser-known serial killers, it continued to quote and constantly find a way to bring other well-known serial killers into the story. This frustrated me as I wanted to know more about the killers in this book not the killers that I already knew so much about. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, as I've said if you want to know anything about a serial killer then just Google it, you'll probably find more from the internet than you will in this book and you really don't want to spending time with this author, which is basically all you do while reading it.

Talking with Psychopaths and Savages - a Journey Into the Evil Mind: A Chilling Study of the Most Cold-Blooded, Manipulative People on Planet Earth There is no index in this book, so you can't even see what books or sources he's talking about. Not that I'd read anything he recommended, if I'm honest. The book had an interesting premise, was promising, and did have plenty of detailed content about a small number of murderers which fit a definition of 'psychopath', as well as several who didn't (and who were assigned the arbitrary term 'savage'). Well researched and peppered with interesting insights, it added a little more to my understanding of this specific type of criminal.

He also rants about how he has proved that John Canaan killed Suzy Lamplugh but no-one will listen - perhaps that's because you wrote a book claiming the same unassailable knowledge that it was Michael Sams who was guilty of the deed. Unfortunately the promised “deep journey into the minds of psychopaths” did not materialise. Instead a string of narcissistic comments, adverts for his own books and personal irrelevant comments about serial killers ensued eg. Berating the standard of a serial killer’s BMW. I've read one of Berry-Dee's books before and am always impressed by the in-depth and personal insight that he is able to shed on some of the most psychopathic minds that we have ever seen. And although Beyond Evil feels more like the leftovers over his previous books, constantly referring to his earlier work, there's still a lot of interesting conversations discussed.Talking with Psychopaths and Savages will inevitably shift the reader's view of those capable of the most heinous murders, and in doing so reveals that horror can be much closer to us than we think. This book is laced with an arrogant tone throughout which honestly makes me more uncomfortable than the actual descriptions of the crimes committed. The author brags about his interactions with serial killers and other criminal psychologists, putting himself on a pedestal while expressing a condescending to the readers and those who may wish to get into his line of work. You would think that with his arrogant tone and bragging he at least knows what he is talking about and writes it in a clear and concise manner. That is not the case. He goes off on tangents which lead to nothing and actually take away from the case. He inserts his own opinions which would be fine if they weren't so pretentious. The writing is inconsistent and has a number of errors in spelling and grammar which makes you wonder if anyone actually read over this before publishing. Having interviewed over thirty of these twisted murderers, whose homicidal craft and skills strangulation; suffocation; knifing; bludgeoning their prey to death; setting victims on fire alive; shooting; injecting with caustic agents and just about every other tortuous means of extinguishing life known to deviant man, I go further than ever before in this book by inviting you to the Gates of Hell. So this book is not for the squeamish. It will not make for a comfortable bedtime read because it is solely intended to put you inside the heads of those killers who thrive on pure evil' - from the author's introduction. Yet in the course of these conversations, the author also had the chance to interview his subjects' psychiatrists and, in doing so, uncovered a terrible truth: a monster can be hidden behind a friendly face. Some of these experts, he found, proved to have more in common with their patients than he would ever have expected. Some of the things in this one were really quite disturbing and it was an eye opener to read about some of the bad guys that I hadn't come across before.
