About this deal

After reading COMING HOME I found myself in love with Judith and her best friend, Loveday Carrie-Lewis. Exploring, Judith had tentatively ventured beyond the bounds of the garden, so that the railway line, the neighbouring violet-farm, and the shores of the estuary became her playground.

The last bit of the journey was the shortest possible walk, because the station stood exactly opposite the bottom gate of the Riverview House garden.

Almost from the beginning, I found myself saving this for things like the stationary bike, as it was encouraging me to bike more and stay on the bike longer. At fourteen, Judith reckoned that she was mature enough to have really important decisions, that were going to affect her, shared and discussed.

Se trata de una historia coral, que nos narra las vivencias de un grupo de personajes entorno a Judith Dunbar, durante los años previos a la Segunda Guerra Mundial, durante ella y justo después; pero es más la historia del día a día que de la batalla en si.

And so her skin was olive, her hair raven-black, and her eyes dark and bright as a pair of juicy raisins. When looking at the cover of this novel I had no idea that I, being male, would ever enjoy this story.

She makes her settings and her people so real and warm that you want to belong there and to remain listening to the sea and watching the waves crash on a Cornwall beach. Towards the 70% mark I really almost cried because this was such a beautiful story of soulmates finding their way back to each other. se aprende mucho sobre todo lo que pasó en aquella época) Veremos a Judith madurando, descubrirá que necesita valerse por sí misma para volverse verdaderamente independiente, todos son llamados a servir a su país, ella decide enlistarse para servir en la marina, le tocará vivir años muy duros y trágicos, superar pérdidas y aceptar que ya nada podrá ser como antes de la guerra. Although the dire circumstances of the war and the historical newspaper reports confirm the physical, emotional, and mental cruelty of their challenges, the drawn out story line just wore me out completely. He had no feelings towards his oldest daughter or his wife’s wellbeing, his wife clearly had a fragile mind and really did not want to be living abroad but he made her come back out there and live her life there. There are so many details, and since I mostly listen and miss some details here and there, it would be a whole new experience, especially now as I know the characters so well. Essentially I see this book as being divided into two main parts; pre-war with all of the build up and establishment of all the characters, and the second part is about the war itself, the fight at home and abroad. Perhaps it is the sum of all those human stories (and there are a lot of stories and characters in this one). It is a very immersive historical fiction/women's fiction and a kind of family saga/coming of age with great characters and relationship dynamics.

The story itself seems to flow quite well, albeit sometimes in a manner that is not entirely convincing. Towards the end, there is one guy that turns out to be kind of bad, but it is obvious he is just a tool used to bring two people together again.Rosamunde Scott was born on 22 September 1924 in Lelant, Cornwall, England, UK, daughter of Helen and Charles Scott, a British commander. An affluent but warm and welcoming family, the Carey-Lewis’s will offer their beautiful dwelling on the Cornish coast as another home-away-from-home for Judith. It was surrounded by a Tarmac playground and a tall wrought-iron fence, and presented a fairly forbidding face to the world. I took the book, read the first fifty pages and was hooked on it from the beginning ~~ Pilcher is a classic storyteller. It was a solid Victorian edifice, built of granite blocks, and had three entrances, marked Boys, Girls, and Infants, a legacy from the days when segregation of the sexes was mandatory.
