About this deal

As our old chum John Thomas might have told us, an artist given to the sudden musical volte-face is impossible to predict. Not many of us could spend the best part of two years perving around to retro-futuristic electro kink-pop with horseheads in killer heels. The album's second single, " Happiness", peaked at number 25 on the UK chart, while the third single, " Caravan Girl", reached number 54.

Oh my GODDESS, this poster is proof that Allison Goldfrapp is not just a musical genius but the woman I come home to worship at my alter. At AllMusic, Heather Phares praised the album's "electro hippie-chic" as the duo's "most polished and luxe work yet". I passed over it after the first few listens but as the immediacy of the more accessible songs begins to wane, I find myself listening more and more to this one and the other inbetween songs such as `Monster Love' and `Cologne Cerrone Houdini'. Bassist Jon Davie adopted the nom de punk John Thomas; whatever you think of their opportunism, you can't fault the dedication of a man so keen to keep his career alive he was willing to name himself after a euphemism for the penis.Musicalement, l'alliance entre les lignes instrumentales et la voix si pure de la chanteuse nous fait voyager. That's assuming you can understand Goldfrapp's lyrics in the first place, since she mumbles incoherently and is muffled under a swampy mix through half the record, which only highlights the feeling of sleepy halfheartedness. There was a certain circular irony in Goldfrapp being ripped off by Madonna: like Mrs Ritchie, Goldfrapp's skill lies in a canny ability to alight on other artists' ideas and polish them up for mass acceptance. The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used, except with the prior written permission of Condé Nast. The acoustic guitar is sensational and Allison's voice (espcially her high-pitched cooing at the end) is euphoric, like I just went out on a date with a girl I never met before absorbing this song.

The album artwork depicted Goldfrapp dressed as a clown and hugging a tree, as well as Gregory dressed as an owl.At its best-- the desolation of "Cologne Cerrone Houdini" and "Some People", which inject the ambience with a much-needed eeriness-- this stuff's fairly soothing; at its worst it evokes that old "Mystery Science Theater 3000" bit about the two-note chords of New Age music: "Put your finger down here. With two hard-to-top electro-pop albums under their belts-- 2003's Black Cherry and 2005's Supernature-- it's safe to assume that Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory are perfectly happy with getting some closure on what they've accomplished in the last few years and are moving on to something else out of a feeling more substantial than impatience.

postcards containing unseen photos included alternate shot of the owlman, and Allison standing in a cute polka dot uniform alongside a horse behind a tree. The look of the glamorous disco diva that appeared on Black Cherry and Supernature is replaced by a more natural but slightly less confident appearance. Kat Lister of NME expressed that " Seventh Tree is bound to ruffle a few electro-feathered fans, but there's no denying it's a venture that sets the pair into new experimental territory. Seventh Tree unveils an Alison Goldfrapp quite different to the one we saw on her career highpoint to date, 2005's Supernature .

an album as hummably lovely as it is knowingly referencing of a certain tradition of neo-psychedelic English whimsy. Other than that, it arrived when it should have (Friday's day of release), and I saved it for a nice Saturday morning listen with biscuits. However, Seventh Tree isn't so much a radical change for Goldfrapp as it is a shift in focus; even if it doesn't sound glam, it sounds glamorous. Their interests were always too diverse and their musical talents too accomplished to become shackled down churning out electro-disco dance numbers - despite what their record company might prefer.

Seventh Tree' was the fourth album by English duo Goldfrapp and was a move away from the glitterball disco-pop they had peddled previously. Not only did I pay this one used for 5 dollars, but it also came in a beautiful mini box digipack set. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 78, based on 32 reviews.
