Then I discovered IN THE LIVES OF PUPPETS was due out soon, so I quickly requested it from NetGalley and here we are. While it has some sweet moments and some funny ones, I don't think this book will stick with me like some of his other work. The day Vic salvages and repairs an unfamiliar android labelled ‘HAP’, he learns of a shared dark past between Hap and Gio – a past spent hunting humans. To that point, and I feel like this is a very unpopular opinion, but I'm getting tired of these soft, SFF books that TJ is writing.

He squealed, pincers opening and closing, his circular body shaking as his all-terrain tires rolled over pieces of metal that had fallen from the scrap heap. Nurse Ratched and Rambo alone are worth this read, but I loved Victor and Hap’s dynamic and Gio as well! A tiny vacuum robot screamed as it spun in concentric circles, spindly arms that ended in pincers waving wildly in the air.

Inspired by Carlo Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio, In the Lives of Puppets is a masterful standalone fantasy adventure from the author who brought you The House in the Cerulean Sea and Under the Whispering Door. With the onset of AI… the story actually comes across as not all that far-fetched, but what I loved most is that it still provided a strong hope for the survival of humanity! As I neared the end of the story, I felt such a profound ache in my heart - as much as it was hopeful, it made me sad to think - which character was the 'puppet' that really eluded to Pinocchio in this story - that fictional puppet in a world of humans? A part of me wanted it to play throughout in the background of Henning’s performance – it was so stirring!
