There are some lighthearted moments, and it’s mostly calm, lulling the reader into a mood that soon will change. Pea Eye was tall and lank, had never been full in his life, and looked so awkward that he appeared to be about to fall down even when he was standing still.I’ve got to be fair and review it for what it is - an ‘epic western’, (and as I do quite often feel some of the classics I read lack enough story! McMurtry has crafted a diverse cast, each with their own unique personalities, strengths, and flaws.

It skillfully captures the camaraderie and bond between the characters, while also delving into the harsh realities of the Old West, including violence, loss, and heartbreak. And yet, he couldn’t bring himself to acknowledge the son he had with the local whore (the son was a prominent character, too, and embodied the compassion many of the other characters lacked). Clara delivers Elmira's baby son, but Elmira and Zwey leave almost immediately afterwards for Ogallala. Her disposition did suggest some time spent with Indians, but which Indians and how long was anybody's guess.Meanwhile, Elmira, pregnant with July's child, has come into the company of a rough buffalo hunter named Zwey, a simple man who seems to believe he is now "married" to her. Their relationships and personal growth throughout the novel add depth and emotional resonance to the story.
