Monte Alban is named for a mountaintop settlement in Oaxaca, Mexico known for its agave plants, both cultivated and wild. For centuries it has been considered a delicacy for the people of Mexico and each agave worm is seen as a key to the soul of the person who eats it. Many fond memories of getting absolutely hammered with good friends and having great times but it tastes nothing like the quality Mezcals we all enjoy today.

It almost seems like sacrilege but it does work well with traditional tequila lemon/lime and salt, would have been rude not to at least try this. It’s a novelty item at best, in a tacky bottle with etched Mexican symbols, a screw ca, and a worm floating in colored, turpentine-flavored alcohol.

A traditionally made Mezcal from 100% Agave, with an Agave worm that legend says gives strength to the one brave enough to eat it. And I can almost guarantee that if anyone has more than 2 drinks of this cheap stuff, they’ll inevitably lose their lunch.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Each tequila has its own "flavor fingerprint," and each person has his or her own flavor preferences. For those who are truly open to tasting and deciphering liquors of all styles and sources, it’s actually sort of an interesting little brew.

Legend says that the worm gives strength to anyone brave enough to eat and some even believe it acts as an aphrodisiac.

This is the juice that made me aware Mezcal was even a thing, I shot tons and tons of this stuff starting around 1994/95. But for those hoping for a budget mezcal you will be severely disappointed – this is just a cheap novelty tequila-flavored liquor of some sort – Jose Cuervo gold poured over cinnamon rolls. I say this because some other reviewers have complained that not receiving the worm bottle spoiled their experience.
