About this deal

The SENCO role was established nearly thirty years ago in the SEN Code of Practice 1994 where it stated that all mainstream schools must have a SENCO responsible for coordinating services around children with SEN. Originally devised to help severely speech and language handicapped children to see a sound and hear a letter by the use of easy and logical hand cues, the Cued Articulation system has, over the last three decades, proved an invaluable teaching tool. We both find Cued Articulation really useful for teaching new sounds – it really helps children to have a sign to attach to the sound. For example a ‘p’ which is a voiceless, bilabial, plosive – meaning no voice box, made with both lips and it’s a popping sound – is made by putting your index finger and thumb together, putting them by the corner of your mouth and then pulling them apart as you say the sound.

Specialist Speech Therapist Jane Passey, developed her Cued Articulation system to provide a visual and kinesthetic way of teaching, and learning, how we make each of the different sounds. Cued Articulation describes how to cue consonant sounds while Cued Vowels describes the 23 standard English vowel sounds. Both ‘p’ and ‘b’ are made in the same way using the lips, the only difference between them is the voicing. They are easy to learn and help children with auditory processing difficulties to "see" the difference between similarly sounding, paired voiced and unvoiced letter sounds e.This thesis considers the impact of Cued Articulation, a multisensory phonics teaching tool, on children’s phonics knowledge, word-reading ability and attitudes towards learning. I know one school that have adopted Cued Articulation instead of the jolly phonics actions as they find it so useful. The study measured the effect of the intervention on children’s phonics knowledge, word-reading ability and attitudes towards learning. The book can be used with the interactive Cued Articulation DVD (interactive whiteboard compatible), which supports the program through demonstration of the cues and sounds.

I use it most for word final sound discrimination; you let the child try on their own, but if they can’t quite hear the sound I model the word again but sign the final sound. The afternoon part of the training focuses on the Cued Articulation Approach which can be used within settings and classrooms to support children presenting with speech sound difficulties.

This training will give practitioners the skills and knowledge to support children who are presenting with speech sound difficulties. It is a helpful tool to promote reading fluency, particularly in blending and segmenting multi-syllable words.

Participants were 154 children, aged four to five years, attending a mainstream setting in the South-East of England. The previously separate titles Cued Articulation and Cued Vowels are now combined and updated, with this edition covering consonants, vowels, demonstrative images and full colour coding throughout. It helps learners to discriminate between, and use, sounds which do not occur in their 1st languages.

Jane Passy devised the cues while working as a Speech Pathologist with a group of children with severe speech and language problems. Using interactive consonant, vowel and diphthong tables, the app displays video cues of each sound, as well as an animated illustration of the mouth and throat while producing the sounds. In their daily Phonics lessons, they learn to link a sound (phoneme) with its written letter (grapheme).

I didn't realise these were flash cards, but are excellent as an addtional resource to support cued articulation and have used them with considerable success to support speech and language in the primary classroom.find Cued Articulation such a practical resource for people with a wide range of communication difficulties.
