About this deal

In 2018 was ze eindelijk terug met een nieuwe serie Tijden van vuur waarbij de familie Joubert geïntroduceerd werd. I enjoyed the themes that involved Louise never putting aside her being a woman but choosing to dress as a man on her ship. Mosse has a really fantastic writing style, making sure to include appropriate terms but not getting so technical that she loses her readers. In The Ghost Ship the publishers promise us ‘piracy, romance, revenge’ and the book certainly delivers on all three. Appositely placed in the past – this compelling tale of women on a mission to be seen and heard is a tale for today.

Across the seas of the seventeenth century, two seafarers are forced to fight for their love and their lives. An encounter with a corsair galley propelled by slaves chained to its oars sets Louise on a path that sees her and the crew of the Old Moon embark on a new and very dangerous mission. When she meets Gilles, a wine merchant's apprentice, she realizes she can be more than she ever thought possible. We kennen allemaal de slavenhandel tussen Afrika en Noord-Amerika, maar we zijn ons minder bewust van de eerdere slaven praktijken zoals deze van de 17de eeuw.

This is the third in the Huguenot diaspora series, the Joubert Family Chronicles, and I loved being immersed once again in Minou and Piet’s family, this time in their granddaughter, Louise’s, exploits in the 1600s.

Your readers need to trust that you’ve got it right, that they are in safe hands, that I know what I’m talking about.

Gripping, thrilling, a spectacular work of scholarly reimagining, The Ghost Ship is a beautiful book about two women, about love, courage, suffering, and a world in which everything was on a knife edge. Mosse portrayed a woman who lived in a man’s world, land the place she so disliked, her ship and the open seas her home, her comfort. It was an interesting take on a woman leading in a man’s world and all the politics that this entails. The ghost ship, as a stand-alone novel, probably actually works quite well, but it just didn’t feel like it was a part of the previous two and the writing just didn’t have the same feeling.Female empowerment, at a time when women were very much second-class citizens, is always wonderful to read, but this tale of high seas adventure and forbidden love was particularly well executed. The first 100 or so pages were incredibly slow and the book never seemed to gain momentum even when the main characters were at last at sea. Then King Henri of Navarre is assassinated and they are forced to flee Paris before there is a recurrence of violence against Huguenots like themselves.

Ze is de eigenaar van het schip d’Oude Maen en moet door verscheidene omstandigheden Nederland zo snel mogelijk verlaten, samen met haar gezel Gilles. Historical detail has always been a strong point of Kate Mosse’s books so much so that you can easily imagine yourself walking the streets of Amsterdam or the quayside of La Rochelle, or later in the book, the Canary Islands. In 1600s the French Tarot cards were very mysterious and new and hated by the Roman Catholic Church.
