About this deal

This is probably one of the most accurate and thorough accounts of the Moors Murders ever, and also one of the best True Crime books ever written. I was interested to see a second book mentioned at the end that will cover the time these two spent in prison. It proves beyond question that the parents of the victims were right all along in their claims about Hindley's part in the murders.

Aside from that, there is so much detailed information in this book and it makes for both horrifying but fascinating reading. Mr Cooks book packed as it is with court transcripts, police interviews, parole service documents, psychiatric reports and more paints a picture of a woman who knew exactly what she was doing. On a different level but no less disturbing to me was the freedoms that their notoriety seemed to allow them in prison. Manages to cover all the major interesting points without treating the killers like rock stars or the survivors like non-entities.

Myra, however, is not depicted as the innocent “tag along”, like most female serial killer partners are, but instead is held responsible for her own rule in the murders, even though she herself denied culpability in the face of damming evidence. The description of the black family moving in next door to the Hindley house (and how they, and everyone else, ignored the bangs and screams on one murder night because that´s just what people did on overspill estates), the regular brewing of pots of tea, the cherry-picked Marquis de Sade quotations, the descriptions of what was on the box that night, what they had to eat and what Gran shouted from the back bedroom.

Beyond Belief: A Chronicle of Murder and its Detection (London: Hamish Hamilton, 1967) (1968 paperback: ISBN 978-0-330-02088-6) is a semi-fictionalized account of the Moors murderers, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, by the Welsh author and playwright, Emlyn Williams. Be prepared to be fully immersed in their worlds, from childhood events all the way to their court case and beyond. As you read about their young lives, and then how they met and began their relationship, you start to get the sinking feeling - and a sick feeling as you know what is going to be done at the hands of the monsters that became the Moors Murderers. Three books written on the Troubles - The Shankill Butchers, God and the Gun, and The Dirty War - which were revelations to me when I first read them.
