The family felt realistic, the distance between Rose and her mother was written beautifully, they have a strained relationship but you can feel the love Rose has for her family. This is a beguiling epic of magic, love, loss and betrayal based on the traditional fairytale "East of the Sun, West of the Moon". It’s a relatively long book (circa 500 pages) but the descriptive story-telling and rich world-building pull you rapidly through.

My own journey to the land that lies east of the sun and west of the moon began when I was a little girl. Its classic style has echoes of Beauty and the Beast, the Snow Queen and Narnia, with a tiny touch of Grimm Brothers’ darkness thrown in for good measure. I also came across a vengeful Troll Queen, a red ball, an uncrossable ice bridge, a gown the colour of the moon, and so much more. East (also known as North Child in the UK and Australia) is a 2003 novel by the author Edith Pattou. Plus-side being, you get to wear your swatch afterwards; although beware of over-indulging in your swatch-accessory, and then having to play yarn chicken.
