The ‘Ruskin Jewel’ is a small blue oval cabochon that was made at the Ruskin Pottery (set up by John Ruskin in 1898) around the turn of the last century.

It is marked on the side with 1968-1-1, Cochin, India and was probably made as a piece of tourist ware/souvenir for visitors to the region by regional craftsman. Although the Art Deco period is considered to be principally decorative and aesthetic driven, its historical context gives the notion of hope for the future. My original aim was to revive old pieces of furniture in need of an overhaul but over the first year my focus shifted and I now spend more time rescuing smaller vintage bits and bobs that deserve a new home. Art Deco was realised post WW1, new technologies had been developed allowing for faster travel, radios were starting to enter the home, there were greater quantities of industrial produced goods and use of new materials such as chrome, aluminium and various plastics.
