Funnily enough, when I started working on Flooded I wasn’t thinking about writing a story about climate change. There is an image, based on the Oxford Circus print, where a panda bear was talking with a tiger on the tube platform, blaming the politicians about what was happening.

It was the second module on the course and it’s when I started to think about sequences and how a few images could tell a story. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated!

Preoccupied by their own concerns, they deal with the practical inconveniences of rising water in humorous and inventive ways until finally they listen to the one voice urging action, and work together on a solution. There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors.

It is also a story about how problems are easier to solve together and communities that work with a positive common goal can be very powerful. This is an exceptionally illustrated story that teaches a message not to let problems fester and with a little team work and community spirit, no problem is insurmountable.

You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! Your words, like your reviews, bring books to life and give them a voice before the front cover is even turned. Flooded by Mariajo Ilustrajo is one of the five books on the shortlist for the 2023 Klaus Flugge Prize. You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods.One of the comments you made in a video was about how the story began with a hippo leaving the taps on. It's also quite re-readable - on a second read through you appreciate the stoat/weasel/otter (not quite sure what he is) trying to get everyone's attention throughout the book to tell them what's going on. Can I be cheeky and ask for a tour of your workspace - it was great to get a snippet from your video. It's a very light touch story that could be enjoyed as it is, but which could also lead to discussions about more serious topics. Flooded was one of the projects I created during my MA Children´s Books Illustration, at Anglia Ruskin (2019).
