About this deal

I used to think C200 was OK until I shot some canola fields and there was just no way I could get the yellows to look any good. Cheap consumer-grade film might bring new shooters into the fold, but the CP crew and I have spoken to industry insiders, and some of these people say that cheap film may actually be harmful to the health of the film photo industry due to a market that’s still quite small (despite a recent uptick in popularity) and the harsh realities of economies of scale. The grain on this film is very apparent, so not great for detailed shots, however it can really add that vintage, washed out look for portraits. They give a way to shoot with all the convenience of the latest electronics and optics, but with an analog output reminiscent of 35mm manual photography. I hope that’s not the case as it would be a shame to lose the already sparse variety in pocket friendly colour film.

When compared to other popular, better looking, and widely available professional-grade color negative films like Kodak Portra and Ektar, these films seem like an unnecessary step down. The Clarity storing pause is about the same amount of time as advancing to the next frame on a film camera. C200 differs to the discontinued Superia 200 in that it does not have the “4th colour layer” which was primarily designed to combat the defective colour spectrum of flourescent lighting. It was fun to get such brightly coloured photos from the lab and I even made a few photos that were worth including in my portfolio. Unfortunately you can’t, until Fujifilm gives the X-T3 the Classic Negative film simulation and the other new JPEG options (I’m still crossing my fingers that they will). With subjects or frames that have prominent green or red areas, the photographs rendered by ColorPlus 200 looked mellow and firm to my personal taste. Although they may not be the “professional choice”, for you professionals out there, I’m still happy if my little project entertained you. Fuji colours tend to be bright anyway, especially the blues, but this roll gives the colours an intense look.

Anna Dzērve is the Latvian photographer behind these captivating portraits created with a projector and Lomography Color Negative ISO 800 film. However the dawn of digital photography put significant strain on it's operations and it has restructured itself (and part-merged with Xerox) around a more diverse set of industries such as digital press, computer systems, and photocopying services. Instead of degrading it for not being a special colour negative film like a Kodak Ektar 100 or a Portra 400, I like to recognise it for what it is. The grain is fine enough to give clarity, and yet not too fine to still give it the characteristics that are unique to film photographs.I scan my negatives on a Noritsu LS600, and I generally only adjust the exposure and very occasionally the contrast - I don't make any direct adjustments to colours/saturation but obviously if the contrast is dialled up or down there'll be a flow on affect. The tone is warm, and the resulting feeling you get from the photos is this feeling of a slightly more mellow and subdued summer. That willingness to explore encouraged by consumer film combined with the unexpected quality of the film itself resulted in some of my best and most personally fulfilling work to date.

Among the original works are those depicting Benjamin Franklin, John Fitch, Robert Fulton, and events such as the Cession of Louisiana. I can see how using one too often might dull your eyes a bit, but switching them up, in this case, would be a great idea. But until that happens, I won’t hesitate to shoot more consumer film to keep myself grounded and remember where I came from. And when that trip turned into a surprise trip to Japan, the low-pressure, high-volume nature of cheap consumer film meant that I could loosen up and shoot away at nearly everything. I use both films but they can’t compare with a Kodak Ektar 100, which of course is much more expensive.

Some of the things that make Fujicolor C200 an average film are the very same things that make it a good choice for your street photography. And more often than not, those films would give me images that would inspire me to keep film alive in my own way.

When not onstage, you can find him roaming around Southern California shooting film and humming a tune. ISO 200 speed film, which offers really fine grain and natural looking results under mixed daylight conditions. Washington is depicted surrounded by 13 maidens in an inner ring with many Greek and Roman gods and goddesses below him in a second ring.

I love the look of consumer film, and still shoot it quite a lot; working on a roll of Gold 200 at the moment! In using C200 myself, I’ve found it entirely pleasing with a nice palette and quite acceptable grain for the extra stop it provides over 100 ISO films. It’s an entirely nondescript, unglamorous film that simply does the job it’s required to do – render images on film. When shooting in nature on a sunny day I sometimes prefer this film over more expensive options because I know that the foliage will pop. In this recipe, I’ve looked to create a recipe that mimics the versatile film negative style of Fujicolor C200 film.
