About this deal

Come on folks, if you really were concerned about security you wouldn’t touch intel with a barge pole. I expected a NAS with this many features would’ve been considerably more expensive than last year’s EconoNAS. While the beauty of a DIY setup lies in the fact that you can make your ideas come true, there are still a few pointers that can get you started with sifting through the NAS motherboards if you are new to building them. Every year, I expect that each NAS will be better than the prior years’, but with the EconoNAS, I’ve often found that they all kind of blur together.

It’s where all your components will plug in, so picking the right one will determine the capabilities of your NAS. You also get a total of 4 memory slots on this motherboard that go great along with its CPU socket especially because of its support for up to 128 GB RAM. slots, you can install either SATA or NVMe SSD drives which work great as a boot drive as well as a cache drive for better speeds with your motherboard. The Asus ROG Strix Z790-I Gaming WiFi is the brand’s newest high-end small motherboard, and we’ve long been admirers of the ROG Strix I line of Mini-ITX motherboards. You can also consider Asus and its offerings if you are looking for computer components that are not only highly reliable, but also offer great performance numbers. Unfortunately, if you are looking for a Mini-ITX motherboard, then you won’t find a motherboard offering more than 4 x SATA ports, particularly for commercial-based sockets such as AM4, AM5, or the LGA1200, LGA1700.

Drives with a smaller capacity exist, but if they’re from a company that I recognize, they’re usually as expensive–or sometimes more expensive! So, someone on Discord asked me why not the X470 board, and because I learned stuff in the meantime, prompted me to reevaluate. If you’re looking to build a small PC, you need to ensure that the compact form factor PC cases you’re considering will support motherboards up to a certain size.

Starting with one of the most basic yet a highly important factor regarding your motherboard for NAS is its form factor. Generally, when you build a PC, you find the CPU of your preference first and then go look for the motherboard. This past Sunday (October 1st) I assembled the EconoNAS and filled up each of its drive bays with 14TB hard drives that I had on hand for a future project.

Talking about the RAM, you will get a total of 4 memory slots on this motherboard for NAS which are great for installing up to 128 GB RAM. Therefore, the total cost of acquiring this controller plus the cables can get quite expensive for those on a budget. With a whopping eight RAM slots, each supporting up to a 16GB 3466MHz DDR4 module, you can install up to 128GB of RAM. You should unpack this to a clean FAT32 formated USB-Stick and simply reboot and it should flash everything .However, many MINI-ITX motherboards may be used with a liquid cooling system and a high-end graphics card without trouble. So, its possible that used enterprise gear can actually be a better bet for reliability than new consumer. Hi, so im corrently using my old amd pc from 2008 with athlon 260u cpu (when i used my pc for desktop same motherboard hosted phenom cpu) and im corrently idle with 6 docker image running and 3 drives spun down in range of about 73w, im thinking that this is way much. Another great thing about this motherboard for NAS is that while it may offer only 3 PCIe slots, 2 of them offer the full x16 size. Before you decide on the perfect motherboard for your NAS, you should know the form factor and size of the motherboard you want.

If you do decide a consumer motherboard is the easiest, most affordable choice, your choice of Unraid is a good one.

While you can always add additional network cards later, having a fast ethernet connection built into your motherboard is helpful. For each manufacturer, I wound up picking the NAS that I felt was most equivalent to DIY NAS: EconoNAS 2023. I’d hate to have them in an array and one drop out during a drive operation, ZFS would mark the drive unusable and degrade the array. Since each hard drive will occupy one SATA port, you’ll need to consider how many drives you plan to connect.
