About this deal

Shift have got the scene contained and the skipper’s taking a statement from the child’s mother as we speak. That winter is a cold and lonely one for Jenna, as she tries to hide from a terrible secret that haunts her thoughts, day and night. I look at them, then I hurl them with all my strength toward the wall, where they shatter into tiny pieces that shower down onto my desk.

Desperate to escape, Jenna moves to a remote cottage on the Welsh coast, but she is haunted by her fears, her grief and her memories of a cruel November night that changed her life forever. She was outspoken, he knew that much, not too nervous to put her point across at team meetings, and she learned fast. In Part 1 we flick between two POVs - that of the woman, choosing to begin her life again after the horrific accident and grief it has left behind.I Let You Go is British author Clare Mackintosh’s intense debut psychological thriller, which also crosses into the mystery based, police procedural territory. Little more than a shed to the casual observer, it is where I come to think, to work, and to escape. On my bedside cabinet is the brass alarm clock Eve gave me when I went to university—“Because you’ll never get to lectures, otherwise”— and I’m shocked to see it’s ten thirty already. In the photo my arms are fixed in the awkward pose of the new mother, drowning in love and exhaustion. The seashore beckons Jenna with its blustery winds as she comes upon a tiny rental cabin not far from the shore.

I was on the point of giving up when a twist was revealed which turned the novel into a page Turner. Jenna really grew on me over the course of the book and all in all, I did appreciate her character growth. AND, despite all the great quotes I made note of, I can only use one that will give nothing away and tell you very little of this amazing debut, (but I love and believe it. I Let You Go crackles with tension from the opening pages and doesn't let go of its grip on you until the very end. The pain in my hand has been overshadowed by a headache that blinds me if I move my head too fast, and as I peel myself from the bed every muscle aches.Jenna has an innocent conversation with the receptionist, Ian sees this as Jenna flirting and a reason to shout at her, belittle her and ultimately hit her.

In time, Jenna retrieves her camera from her backpack and begins to photograph the beauty of the tide. The plot wasn't really exciting and then they were other small reveals throughout the story which were so predictable or just unnecessary, like the bit where it turns out Jacob was Ian's son just seemed so pointless and was only thrown in for shock value.

I couldn’t get enough, and even its end delivers jaw-dropping moments which makes the story linger long after the flip of the final page. His coping mechanism relied on focusing on the investigation—on the hard evidence before them—and not dwelling too deeply on the emotions of the people involved. The Welsh countryside was a joy to read about, the ocean sounds wonderful there, even if so very different to the sunny summers of Sydney. In addition to Kate, Stumpy’s team included the steady Malcolm Johnson and young Dave Hillsdon, an enthusiastic but maverick DC, whose determined efforts to secure convictions sailed a little too close to the wind for Ray’s liking. The gripping, heart-stopping story unfolds from different perspectives, revealing varying pieces of the puzzle until suddenly I saw the big picture and it was nothing I envisioned.

Even she can’t say for sure it was there ( ‘The sea washes over the writing I’m now not certain I saw at all. Detective Inspector Ray Stevens stood next to the window and contemplated his office chair, on which an arm had been broken for at least a year. Although Bethan continues to try to develop their friendship Jenna cannot bring herself to become close to anyone again due to what happened in Bristol. This develops into a continued relationship between the two of them where they do finally get married. The investigating duo of Kate and Ray arrive on the scene and as the book develops they rub along in an amicable working environment.
