About this deal

Starting in his place of birth, Torre Del Greco in Napoli, where he learnt to cook in the kitchens of his Nonna Flora and Mamma Alba, Gino is going back to his roots to celebrate all the women whose kitchens have fuelled Italy through their incredible food. About a year ago, I bought a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy special edition and I love it – especially when I take Rocco for a ride in the morning by the sea and get fresh croissants and an espresso. It has 246 pages of recipes, family pictures of Gino and his family/ up-bring and each recipe comes with a big colorful picture. With recipes including Pasta all Genovese, Steak Fiorentine and Tortellini Gino will have his work cut out to keep up with the women running the kitchens which he visits.

Because it’s one of the only places where my family is all together [Gino and his wife, Jessica, share three children together, sons Luciano and Rocco and daughter Mia]. You visit Sardinia’s ‘Blue Zone’ – an area renowned for having the largest number of people that live to 100 years old. Biography: Born into a large family in Napoli, Gino's love of cooking developed from a young age when he was taught to cook by his mother and, at the age of 11, started working at his grandfather's restaurant. After training at the Luigi de Medici Catering college, Gino came to work in London and was soon discovered as a TV talent.I visit Procida [an island in the Bay of Naples] which I enjoyed as I grew up near the ocean, so I love anything to do with the sea. In this new series he’ll reveal his tastiest family recipes, learn new dishes and meet some incredible Mammas. The series producer and director is Naveed Chowdhary-Flatt with executive producers Helen Cooke and David Harrison for Betty TV.

The dessert section is a bit small and a bit too fancy for me but there are lots of nice recipes in different categories. Gino’s Italy: Like Mamma Used to Make was commissioned for ITV by Nicola Lloyd, Factual Entertainment commissioner and Sue Murphy, Head of Factual Entertainment. My journey as a chef is all thanks to two generations of women and this series is about honouring them as well as exploring Italy and local dishes from other families and their matriarchs along the way. It will always be the most special dish in the world to me because it’s the last dish that my mother cooked for me before she passed away. In a personal food odyssey, Gino will be travelling the length and breadth of Italy to encounter local dishes .Headed by Joint Creative Directors David Harrison and Helen Cooke, Betty TV has a rich heritage of producing popular factual formats which tell incredible stories with diverse characters.

That’s why I try to have a good work-life balance and work for six months and then take six months off and go on holiday.Nicola said: “This show will see Gino immersed in the culture that fired his passion for cooking and invite viewers to join him as he celebrates the women who nurture and continue the traditions that make Italian food the centre of family life with all the warmth, humour and wisdom that brings. Helen Cooke, Joint Creative Director of Betty TV added, “It’s a pleasure to be working with Gino as he cooks for his toughest crowd yet – some of Italy’s feistiest female cooks. Gino’s Italy: Like Mamma Used To Make begins with Gino re-uniting with his aunts Lina and Rita and niece Martina, and Gino’s suitably embarrassed when they pull out family photos albums full of a naked baby Gino!
