About this deal

The narratives by both, Roger Allam and Emilia Fox were spot on and helped to push this book to a five star for me. A slow start, but then the story began to really draw me in and the big question about Harry’s parentage ebbed and flowed beneath the surface until the build to the denouement – where everything falls apart beneath an avalanche of revelations. Like I don't know how many times the readers were told that Harry Clifton is smart and poor , smart and poor , I mean we get it in first 5 times but if you keep mentioning it for 50 times , I don't know.

The writing itself is concise and to the point and without too much of a descriptive slant, but it’s a clever structure and the likeable characters combined with steadily building tension, kept me turning the pages. It kept retelling the same story but from a different character's perspective, so I had to go back in time to listen to the same story over and over.Relatively plotless, the story was however so engaging it was difficult to put down, with the interesting technique of revealing the tale little by little from different character's points of view. I listented to it and it made my 3 miles on the treadmill bearable and that is what I want in an audiobook.

Old jack, another character plays a vital role in helping Harry climb up his ladder of success while sharing his wisdom and finding ways to help Harry. In The Short, The Long and The Tall the master storyteller joins forces with renowned illustrator Paul Cox, to re-imagine twenty of Jeffrey Archer's most popular and feted short stories alongside beautifully rendered watercolour illustrations. I didn’t press the point with my old man, as I’ve never exactly covered myself in glory in his eyes. My grandpa rarely offered an opinion on anything, but then he was deaf as a post so he might not have heard the question in the first place. He gained a Blue in Athletics at Oxford, was President of the University Athletics Club, and went on to run the 100 yards in 9. At least it taught me a simple lesson: if you make a deal with a fool, don’t be surprised when they act foolishly.
