About this deal

When the body of a young American student is found in the backseat of a car during a road accident it quickly becomes evident that was not how the young woman met her death.

Both the novels are fairly short but are full of action and suspense with good believable characters. Don't be put off by the fact that it is a series of books as it works perfectly as a stand alone thriller. As I mentioned above, figuring out the who and the where was easier for me than in some of the other books, but the why I struggled with more. Although this book should keep you turning pages, there were parts of it that didn't quite hang together for me.

I have to admit that as the series goes on the romantic lives of the two main characters are starting to annoy me slightly, I just wish they would both make a decision on where they want to go with their partners. Their detective work involves analyzing forensic evidence and tracking down witnesses to solve the case.

One thing I think it's worth mentioning for those of you who may be new to this series is this is the first time (that I've seen) one of these books ends on a cliff-hanger. I had read and enjoyed the previous book by this author featuring these detectives so I was looking forward to this novel. She seemed to be more of a sounding board and a conscience telling him what to do in his personal life. All this and a missing child and mysterious, horribly tortured body found at the scene of an auto accident. Furthermore, this book loses a whole point, one less star, based on the abrupt ending which means it can not standalone and the reader is obliged to read on . I have not marked it quite so high as the previous book 'Dead Wrong' but it was a very strong 3 star rating and could of easily have been a 4.

The narration by Jonathan Keeble is excellent, but it's not enough to make me want to continue the series. I'm confused by her choice of very similar titles and without some kind of guidance I seem to be always picking a book in the middle of a series. It may be quite realistic; they are both married to the job, but it makes me want to shake them both! As that is not possible, I have awarded four stars rather than three as the story certainly held my interest throughout. I've listened to MANY mysteries/thrillers and really enjoy this author's writing skills in this genre. Our two main detectives are still having problems finding any balance between work and private life and this series of murders isn’t making it any better. The author obviously recognizes she has readers from this side of the pond and provides quite a detailed glossary. But for those whose idea of British literature is what's used by Jane Austen it creates a certain amount of confusion -- but a lot of local color.
