About this deal

D’Vaughn hopes being on the show will help her come out to her family, Kris hopes to find true love. I personally don’t have much experience watching reality shows, so I don’t know if that helped or hurt my perspective on how that was shown to us on the page. D’Vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding could have been a 5-stars read had the editing been more convincing.

I wish we had seen a little bit more of the influencer side of Kris's life as well as more dealing with the show—maybe more of the impact after it aired—and contestants.i love that the romance is black and sapphic, that kind of representation is amazing and we need to see more of it in romance novels. There’s something in the way this story is written, especially in the dialogues (and the Jitter Cam moments) that I find extremely satisfying. The romance was nice, but the premise of the book, the way they needed to convince their family that they were in love and will be married made me really uncomfortable.

Ofte, in romance books, the story feels like it's happening in a bubble with how uninvolved everyone else seems to be. She has her share of insecurity though, and I liked that, I like that she’s not all stud and no personality. There’s so much unconditional love mixed with a failure to understand, the ambivalence was hard to take. Her main motivation for going on the show is to come out to her family, which she’s never been able to bring herself to do.

A reality show isn't the best place to create a solid foundation, and their fake wedding might just derail their relationship before it even starts. But I do think it might have added something to see more of D’Vaughn and Kris standing strong against something. Now even though this is a mostly low angst story, the family's response to the whole thing was way too chill to be realistic. I guess the only thing I can say in her defense is that it wasn't aired live, and Kris did end up being someone very important to her.

A reality show isn’t the best place to create a solid foundation, and their fake wedding might just derail their relationship before it even starts. She’s right on the cusp of really making it as an influencer, so a stint on reality TV is the perfect chance to elevate her brand. This was a sweet and romantic story, full of memorable characters, reality show moments, a bit of steam, and the tentative steps toward love. Unfortunately, there were a few subjects they skirted around but, at the same time, they were forthcoming with their feelings (even when it required prodding from their friends and family). I don’t think I’ve ever read a book this fast but once I started I could not stop until the very end! The conversations surrounding one’s relationship to religion, their comfortability in their sexuality, and learning to break away from preconceived notions of various communities were so refreshing and good to see sprinkled in this Romcom. Higgins gives world-weary readers looking for an inclusive and thoroughly enjoyable escape exactly what they need.
