I have the first edition of this book ,had it for over forty years ,so decided as it was in a poor state it was time to get a replacement for it . Everything is round or swirly; pineapple rings, fish mousse shaped like a life buoy, concentric circles of tiny cream rosettes.

On the one hand, such words as “diner,” “wine,” and “cuisine” show a new fascination with dinner parties. I picked one of these books up from a local book stall as a gift for a friend and had to have one for myself. Most of the ones I own favour style over substance, and rarely have more than two or three recipes you would bother to cook again.

Published in 1970 and written by Mary Berry and two women I’ve never heard of since, (a similar fate befell the two women who worked with Julia Child on Mastering the Art of French Cookery) it boasts “over 300 quick and easy recipes all illustrated in full colour”. Cooking a meal from scratch can be a satisfying, relaxing and rewarding experience, no matter what your level of experience and time available.
