About this deal

The Allen wrench comes from the mid-1900s and has become the standard for what we know as a hex key. The Allen Manufacturing Company is a registered trademark and created a set of quality hexagonal wrenches, which are standard and metric sizes, where Allen key sizes in mm are common. This 10-piece key set is corrosion resistant and is made from chrome vanadium steel, for a long and dependable tool life. If you are uncertain, make a guess, and to minimize time wasted, you can start with the middle wrench in Allen wrench set sizes you have and work up or down the sizes until you find the right one. Allen wrenches or Allen keys are available in different styles. The most common is the L-shaped hex key, yet you have variations incorporating different handle designs, different materials, or special features. Moving over to the right-hand side, we’ve provided the metric to SAE guide for Allen wrench conversions. Similar to the metric hex keys, the SAE hex wrenches don’t always have a perfect substitute as seen for SAE size 3/16″. Thus, we recommend that those with only a metric Allen wrench set add a separate SAE hex key set to their stable. Substituting Uncommon Hex Sizes

It enables a more pleasant action when used repeatedly and allows for greater torque to be exerted than with the traditional L-shaped Allen key, which is also available. Short and long lengths are also offered, so you can insert the shorter tools into tighter spaces or corners where a longer tool wouldn’t fit in the bolt. Hold onto your Allen key size chart in mm or metric, as using the wrong size Allen key on your hex bolt could easily strip the inside. If you are interested to know about the drill sizes for tapping metric thread and BSP thread then follow the link below These chrome-plated hex keys have a degree of corrosion resistance, however, correct storing of your tools will increase their useful life. It is recommended that the tools are stored in a clean and dry environment.

You should use the correct size of the tool mentioned in the table. Otherwise, it will slip (seperate from the tool) and causes mild or severe injury. Some of the most important fasteners are Allen bolts, Hexagonal bolts, CSK (Counter Sunk Bolt) and Grub screw / Set screw. Button head bolt also used for aesthetic looking. An Allen key size chart is frequently included with self-assembled furniture, such as infant cribs, outdoor swings, or computer tables. The head of the hexagonal bolt has six sides ( hex - means six in Greek, gonia - means angle in Greek, bolt head has six sides and six angles) and so it is called hexagonal. But the head of the Allen bolt has only cylindrical shape. But it is called Allen Bolt. Why? Our range of long-reach Allen keys are manufactured by leading brands like Irwin, Stanley, Bahco, GearWrench, Wiha Tools, Facom, RS PRO, and of course the original trademark designer, Allen. How would you use a long reach hex key?

We use Allen key or Hex key (Allen keys or Hex keys - two are same but name is different in different countries) for Allen bolts, CSK bolts, Button Head bolts and Grub screw (Set screw). Allen screws are not pre-stamped on the top or side of the screw with the Allen wrench size needed and can add to the difficulty of locating the correct Allen wrench.Lastly, there’s one other added benefit to having both SAE & metric hex keys. In the United States, larger metric half sizes like 6.5 mm aren’t standard in most hex key sets. However, the 1/4″ SAE hex wrench will likely work in place of a 6.5 mm wrench. In scenarios like these, use the chart to estimate the correct alternative. You can test different sizes till you find the best match. We do recommend starting slowly to ensure that you don’t damage the hardware. Figure 1 – The cross-section of an Allen™ key showing the measurement for width across flats Types of Allen™ Wrenches A: In 1909-1910, William G. Allen patented a method of cold-forming screw heads around a hexagonal die. The first trademarked hex key in the US was made by Allen Manufacturing and the name has been used ever since.

Figure 1 below shows the cross-sectional profile of the Allen™ wrench or Allen™ key. The important parameter that establishes the size of the Allen™ wrench or Allen™ key is the width across flats, which is the distance between any two of the faces of the tool that are parallel to each other. Long-reach Allen keys are a common feature of most good quality hex key sets, which tend to include a useful range of common wrench sizes and diameters (typically from around 1-1.5mm, up to 12mm and beyond). What is "M" in M5: M here denotes metric. So M5 means 5 mm (milli metre) metric thread. So when we mention the thread type of metric which is used in the bolt or screw we will mention the size of the bolt or screw prefixing M.So we can say M3 Hex bolt, M3 Allen bolt, M3 nut, etc. From RS PRO, this high-quality T-handle hex key set is a handy way to keep differing allen key sizes all in one place. The rubberised t-handles ensure that applying torque is easy and efficient, and the range of sizes means you're fully prepared for precision hex driving applications. Size and weight – Allen™ keys tend to be smaller and lighter than the equivalent tools used to apply other fastener types, making them easier to carry. This can be an advantage for applications where mobility is important such as with cyclists that might want to carry a bike tool kit along on a ride.
