About this deal

That was the year that I kept a scrap book, which has been given to Vinny [Codrington – former Chief Executive] for Middlesex archives. The Thursday mini works outing comprised me, Jez, Monique, Steph, Rich and Grant. That season, Jez and I were organising several mini-outings to the T20 matches, rather than the slightly larger whole team outings that became the norm in later years. The weather was especially good that June – as Monique wrote the next day: A statement released by the ECB said Middlesex "have accepted non-compliance of their CPA with ECB, and that the Club has been financially mismanaged over a number of years and is in breach of the ECB financial regulations."

I managed to arrange my day sensibly for this one, with a game of real tennis scheduled at 16:00 ahead of the AGM which was due to start 18:00/18:30. Winding on 32 years and I now have the privilege of being the Chief Executive of this great institution and Club and sometimes I still have to pinch myself. Those heroes have become colleagues and friends and I know few people who gain as much pride and pleasure from their occupation as I do. Middlesex CCC is so much more than a Sports Club. It’s a family that looks after its staff, members and supporters in a way no corporate entity truly can. It has truly been a love affair for me. Through my twenties, I could not get to Lord’s very often. Because I was working abroad for much of the time. But when, over Christmas 2004, I saw an advertisement for the Head of Finance role at Middlesex, I didn’t have to think twice. I had a first interview with Vinny Codrington and instantly liked him and was invited for a second interview with Treasurer Geoff Norris and Chilton Taylor (he of the unregistered player, points deduction scandal!). I was aware that I was the second of two candidates being interviewed for the position and, as I sat down, I noticed that Geoff Norris, at the bottom of his notes about the previous candidate had written ‘Too old!!!!’– from that point on I relaxed, knowing I had a pretty good chance.Prior to talk about the successful season, discussion centred around the proposed new T20 tournament and Durham’s penalty relegation. MTWD have written up the forum, here.

The forum is usually an opportunity for members to vent their spleens, but in a Championship winning season (have I mentioned that fact before?) there wasn’t too much spleen to vent. This is my final MTWD offering. My perspective of our promotion. Unsure if going up, we have a chance I end up in Fawlty Towers and the many doubtful moments if going up willactually happen. Janet’s match reports were often brimming with details about her life…details of her journey, her lousy neighbours, every aspect of the lunch she had brought with her, the posse of Allen Stand gossips who attended that day. Astonishingly, MTWD match report readers learnt more about Janet’s pussy (indeed several cats over the years) than the UK public ever learnt about Mrs Slocombe’s pussy, Tiddles, in Are You being Served.Middlesex responded with a statement that described them as "extremely disappointed with the outcome of the ECB's investigation and the sanctions which are imposed upon us." The AGM was no more dull than usual, in the main. The contentious issue of the new T20 tournament was handled very well, with Mike O’Farrell signalling what was to come in his opening remarks and Richard Goatley then reading out the statement, getting early applause when the gist of it became clear to the throng.
