About this deal

Does not reach the heights of whiskeys like the Redbreast or the Green Spot but is way better than the average Irish Whiskey. FAQ: Writers’ Tears Copper Pot Whiskey First created by Bernard Walsh in 2009, Writers’ Tears comprises a range of eight expressions of super-premium, triple-distilled Irish whiskeys. Writers’ Tears is a marriage of inspiration and art. Inspired by the golden era of Irish whiskey, pot still distillation and its deep lasting bond with creative thinkers and artists, stemming from the literary greats that defined Irish culture in the 19th and 20th centuries. The range includes four core (Copper Pot, Double Oak, Single Pot Still & Red Head) and four limited-edition expressions. Three of the limited-edition expressions in the range are under the Writers’ Tears Copper Pot line and feature rare cask finishes – Ice Wine, Marsala and Mizunara. The fourth limited-edition expression is a Cask Strength vintage, produced annually. Remarkably priced and rightfully adorned with numerous accolades, which I will mention shortly, Writers’ Tears embodies the classic old-school Irish whiskey flavor profile from bygone times, making it a valuable addition to any whiskey cabinet. How does the Writers’ Tears Copper Pot rank? Finish: Short to medium. Lingering sweetness with very little spice. Soft and delicate finish with little to no burn. A very easy drinker.

Finally, we have the Writers’ Tears Copper Pot Japanese Cask finish. Aged in ex-bourbon barrels before a 9-month finish in one of two Japanese Mizunara Oak casks. This expression was bottled at a healthy 55% abv and was launched in time for Ireland's much hyped trip to the Rugby World Cup finals. It is only available in either the Dublin or Cork outlets of The Loop Duty Free and is priced at €100 (duty paid) or €84 (duty free). Writers' Tears Copper Pot - review

I find Writers’ Tears to be a whiskey that stands out for its robustness and flavor, surpassing the typical Irish Whiskey with a satisfying bite on the finish that serves as a pleasant reminder of its whiskey character.

Here, I’ve immersed myself in the art of crafting Mezcal, gaining a newfound appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into distilling this ancient spirit. Ulysses Joyce’s epic novel is about regular people going about their lives on a single day in Dublin – 16th June, 1904. The novel is celebrated on the same historic date every year. A drinks reception at the International James Joyce Symposium in MOLI (Museum of Literature Ireland, Dublin). The nose is sweet, revealing notes of honey and caramel, accompanied by a touch of malt and a hint of fresh apple. No, alcohol doesn’t expire. It will last for years as long as you store it in a cool place away from sunlight. Writer’s Tears Irish Whiskey is remarkable. I was not expecting to like a 40%, young, chill-filtered whiskey as much as I am. The blend of Irish Single Malt and Irish Single Pot Still creates a richness and depth that blows past my expectations and has me sitting here smiling like an idiot while typing this up and sipping on a glass.

The flavor profile presents an upfront combination of honey and apple, followed by vanilla, caramel, and a subtle hint of oak spice. THE DRAM OF DREAMERS

Disaronno International EVP/General Manager, Ray Stoughton, said: “We are excited and proud to be expanding Writers’ Tears presence and availability in the United States. Writers’ Tears is a world-class whiskey that has achieved a dedicated following that will only continue to gain momentum as we expand into new markets in the US. Irish whiskey will continue to be one of the hottest categories in all spirits in 2018. Writers’ Tears positioning in the super-premium segment of the category will continue to push the Irish whiskey category to even greater heights.” On the nose: A definite sandalwood note on the nose along with pine, white chocolate and caramel. Underneath this are flashes of apple and pear and eventually some citrus zest. The nose does feel rather tight and closed though. Water does improve things making the nose more overtly fruity with dry woody spice and citrus oils.

Malt, caramel, vanilla beans, toffee, fruit, oily spice and a bit of copper. It might be a bit limited in scope, but the richness of what’s there is quite nice. This experience was a precursor to my venture into the liquor shop business, where I had the privilege of curating an extensive collection of liquors, granting me access to thousands of unique bottles from across the globe. The Copper Pot is a great value blend that offers excellent value for money, is well balanced and offers enough to keep you returning to the bottle. I feel that if this was delivered at 46% it would be a 7 but I understand this may raise the price a little although I'd happily pay a little extra for more flavour and that I think the extra abv would bring to the table. That being said for the price there is little to argue over.
