About this deal

It is a more versatile Port wine which is very good served alone or accompanying with starters or as a dessert wine. It is pairing well also with any sweets, desserts and cheeses beautifully.

The bottle should be stored upright, avoiding direct light and excessive humidity, ideally at a constant temperature of 16ºC-18ºC. is ready for drinking and will not improve if kept for a long time. Serve between 12ºC-16ºC. Luís’ adage continues that Aged Tawnies, conversely, are ‘made by men, with the help of God’. So, it is mostly Luís’ expertise in the art of Aged Tawny blending that secured the ‘Dona Antónia’ the 20-Year-Old Tawny Port Trophy at the 2021 International Wine Challenge. This intense and complex Tawny is bursting with evolved flavours of dried figs and apricots, roasted hazelnuts, baking spice and toffee. The wine presents a pale ruby color with a beautiful shine, and amber and orange tones at the edge, which reminds us of its maturation in the wood. And strong legs appear on the glass showing the 20% of alcohol content and the high sugar level in this Port. Founded in 1942, the Sogrape Vinhos resulting in the creation of the iconic Mateus rosé, still today one of the most admired wine brands in the world. Currently managed by the third generation of the founding family, the company owns more than 750 hectares of vineyards in the main Portuguese wine regions and is responsible for the production of such renowned brands as Mateus rosé, Gazelle, Casa Ferreirinha and Sandeman. The company exports its wines to more than 70 countries. It has a beautiful red colour, with intense tawny shades that recall its slow maturation in wood. Its bouquet is intense and rich with hints of very ripe fruit (plum, apricot and marmalade) and floral notes. Complex, its spice and nutty notes derive from the evolution in oak wood, through oxidation In the mouth, it is a full-bodied and rich-flavoured wine, extremely well balanced, that combines elegance with a delicate yet persistent finish. White wines, generally crisp, mineral-driven blends of Arinto, Viosinho, Gouveio, Malvasia Fina and an assortment of other rare but local varieties, are produced in small quantities but worth noting. Glenn E. wrote:(c) is more specific than (d). If you wish to have a category (c) Port, it must be at least 7 years old and must say that it is a tawny (or white) on the label. If not both, then it may only be category (d) with the further condition that it may be called ruby if it is purple or deep red. I'm not sure why anyone would want to produce a 7+ year old (c) Port but only label it as a (d), but it appears to be legal by these statutes. It is a most versatile Porto Wine. It is very good served on its own, accompanying some selected entrées or as dessert wine. It also accompanies beautifully most sweets, desserts and cheeses. Serve slightly cold for fuller appreciation. The history of the Douro cannot be mentioned without her name, life and action. The oldest demarcation region in the world owes this woman the impulse and entrepreneurship that would take Douro wines, especially port wine, to previously unknown levels.

So if you have a Port that qualifies as a Tawny Reserve, it also qualifies as a Reserve and can presumably be labeled as either. Luís claims that Vintage Ports are ‘made by God, with the help of men’. If this is the case, the almighty certainly had a hand in the latest declaration: the 2018 Vintage Port was awarded a perfect 100-point score by Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss who described it as immensely age worthy and impressively structured, striking “a perfect balance between its powerful, spicy fruits and firm tannins”. The Late Bottled Vintage, aged in cask in the Ferreira lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia for around four years before release, is more immediately approachable. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, known as Ferreirinha created an empire and kept its name, until today, associated with one of the most famous Port Wine brands. This Dona Antonia Reserva Tawny wine was produced from carefully selected bunches of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Amarela grape varieties. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira immediately became a symbol of the Douro, buying countless vineyards to prevent them from falling into the hands of the English, and developing important social works in the region such as hospitals, for example. But who was this strong woman Ferreirinha?A producer can't simply decide to bottle a "reserve" or "tawny reserve" - as i understand, samples would need to be submitted to IVDP with an application for approval in a particular category (and the port would need to be specifically approved by IVDP for that particular category).
