About this deal

Something I enjoy is painting. I have taken quite a few art classes and find it very creative to work with paint and charcoal and images instead of words, though somehow I can't help adding bits of poetry and scraps of words into my paintings, too… When I was at school, I was completely obsessed by the Pre-Raphaelites, and I love the way their art is so intertwined with poetry and stories. My best friend is an artist and she is incredibly inspiring to me. We turned the narrative poem (The Spider and the Fly) into a playscript, by setting it out correctly and adding detailed stage directions. We then acted them out in assembly, for Years 5 and 6. Holiday worked for architect William Burges for a period, including providing wall and ceiling paintings for Worcester College, Oxford (1863–64) [9] and furniture paintings – including Sleeping Beauty for the headboard in the bedroom – at Burges's London home, The Tower House. [10] The Sleeping Beauty bed is now in the collection of the Higgins Art Gallery & Museum, Bedford. Holiday has four oil paintings in British national public collections. [11]

Transcript [ ] When Henry lets the sheep out of the field, many more sheep leave it than there were first in it the moment Henry opens the gate. In the same year, 1855, Holiday made a journey to the Lake District. This was to be the first of many trips to the area, where he would often holiday for long periods of time. Whilst there, he spent much of his time sketching the views which were to be seen from the various hills and mountains. He wrote, "For concentrated loveliness, I know nothing that can quite compare with the lakes and mountains of Westmorland, Cumberland and Lancashire". [ full citation needed] Paintings [ edit ]

Henry Holiday in Cumbria

Next, Henry, Peter and Dad go for a swim in the lake. Dad dives in first, but finds the lake very cold. Peter follows and encourages Henry to join him, but Henry refuses, because he thinks the snakes will get him. Dad tries to get Henry to go in, but Henry grabs on to a tree. When Dad tries to pull him off, they both go flying into the lake, much to Peter's amusement. Henry stands up, soaking wet and freezing cold, and says he hates nature. Holiday is now remembered only for two, incongruous, works: the large and at one time much reproduced painting in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, of 'Beatrice denying her Salutation to Dante', and the series of nine fantastic and grotesquely imaginative illustrations to Lewis Carroll's 'The Hunting of the Snark' (1876). At Casterton, as well as the splendid East and West windows, there are also large wall paintings by Holiday. From 1899, Holiday worked with Jessie Mothersole as studio assistant and she remained closely associated with the family until Holiday's death. In 1906 Holiday gave Mothersole a drawing of his daughter Winifred, which later was acquired by the British Museum. [16] Henry Holiday (Biographical details)". British Museum . Holiday's 'The Bride and the Daughters of Jerusalem' (1861–3) has also disappeared, but the study (1982,0515.22) clearly reflects the influence of Rossetti and Burne Jones.

Gillian Shields was born and brought up in Yorkshire, in the north of England. As she grew up, she had two passions:books and theater. Gillian’s love of books led her to read English at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge. After university she studied acting in London. She then taught in a drama school, the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts, for several years, becoming Vice Principal. She recently taught English and Drama at Beechwood Sacred Heart, a girls’ boarding school.Holiday also created some sculpture, in 1861 producing a piece called Sleep which attracted favourable critical interest.
