Nudity in Greek life was the exception in the ancient world. What had begun as a male initiation rite in the eighth century BCE became a "costume" in the Classical period. Garbati’s Medusa previously made her New York debut in December 2018 in the “ MWTH Project,” a group show exploring revisionist versions of classical heroic narratives. Pan Copulating with a Goat is an old sculpture that was found in Pompeii. It was one of several sexual statues from an old Roman erotic collection found there. The feminist art movement was aimed at giving women the opportunity to have their art reach the same level of notoriety and respect that men's art received.
