UK hi-fi brand Linn have a range of power amps, many of which include balanced inputs, that come up for sale regularly, and often for very reasonable sums. If all other stations are working ok and you have just lost one station. The problem could be due to a number of reasons, the station may have stopped broadcasting or have moved multiplexes rather than a radio fault. Allof the stations in one multiplex should be behaving the same way. As soon as any connection within the circuit gets longer than perhaps 1% of the wavelength of the highest specified frequency (e.g., at 100MHz the wavelength is 3m, so the critical connection length is approx. 3cm) design properties radically change. For example, a specified length and width of a PCB trace can be used as a selective or impedance-matching entity.

This PA looks like a close relation of the ones in the PE ad. IIRC there's no mention of TUAC on the PCB but I've seen other TUAC PCBs with their name in the foil somewhere. The Baker Major has the customary 4-input 2N3819 mixer on the front, which is the same as the one in an RTC although that power amp is completely different (Quasi-comp, I think). I don't know whether the 1973 date on the driver transistor is original - it had been messed about with inside, hence the few other later components such as the white power resistors that were replacements I put in.

For special purposes, other active elements have been used. For example, in the early days of the satellite communication, parametric amplifiers were used. The core circuit was a diode whose capacitance was changed by an RF signal created locally. Under certain conditions, this RF signal provided energy that was modulated by the extremely weak satellite signal received at the earth station. NAD are another predominantly hi-fi brand, but they have a justly deserved reputation for high-performance amplifiers. The C 268 fits the passive monitoring bill pretty well. We are bringing forward slightly the switch-off date of our SD channels on satellite platforms from March 2024 to 8 January 2024. This means from 8 January next year, a ‘channel closed’ message will appear on all our SD channel feeds on satellite.
A factor I’ve not yet covered in my musings on amplifier power, and one that can be significant, is the characteristics of the load that a passive monitor presents to its amplifier, and for that we need to look again at the impedance curves of Diagram 1. Two nominally 8Ω monitors can look very different to an amplifier: one can be a breeze to drive, while another might be more troublesome. Amplifiers are generally happier driving a higher impedance, because they’re then required to deliver less current. That being the case, it’s interesting to look at a monitor’s impedance curve and see where in the 20Hz to 20kHz band the impedance is low. If it’s low in a region of the frequency band where the volume levels tend to be highest, the fundamental vocal band for instance (say, 150 to 600 Hz), the current demand will be significant and the amp will have to work hard. If, however, the impedance holds up reasonably well in that region, the amplifier will have a generally easier time. Telescopic aerials on portable radios should be fully extended to receive a good signal. Tilting and swivelling the aerial will help to get the best signal. Broken aerials may affect reception.
