About this deal

In my garden, I’ve had to add compost and other amendments to increase the amount of moisture the soil can hold. Lemon trees thrive best in slightly acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 – 6.5. This range enables optimal availability of essential nutrients. If the soil pH is too acidic or alkaline, the plant struggles to draw nutrients, eventually causing deficiency symptoms. Soil preparation can be done at any time that the ground is not too wet or frozen. Your trees may be planted even when temperatures are quite cool. If a hard frost is expected, it is advisable to delay planting for a while until temperatures become more moderate. Generally, as long as your soil is workable, it is fine to plant. I’m a big fan of making things myself in general, and that goes for potting soil, too. I love the idea of customizing the ingredients to provide the best environment possible for my plant. But that side of me is often in conflict with the convenience factor of purchasing a pre-made mix. After all, those companies are the experts, right? But before the soil mix comes into play, the planting container is equally important. Ensure appropriate draining holes in the container before filling it with your potting soil. The soil mix is needed to meet the nutrient requirement of the tree.

Whatever you choose, avoid any potting mixes that include chemical wetting agents (sometimes labeled as “moisture control”), as these can hold on to too much moisture after watering. I’d also avoid mixes with added fertilizers, if possible, to give you the chance to use a fertilizer of your choice. Soil Sunrise Citrus Potting Mix

The best way to ensure the soil has good drainage is to mix in larger chunks of materials such as branches, leaves, and perlite. To better understand what makes soil loamy or sandy, let’s look at the different soil types: clay, loam, and sand. Clay is an alkaline soil, not a great growing medium for citrus trees due to its high pH and compactness. I’ve linked to where you can buy the ingredients below, but they should be fairly easy to find in stores. Citrus Tree Potting Mix Recipe Avoid inorganic or chemical wetting agents as they make the soil too wet. For increased aeration, you can mix wood chips with the soil. It is best to have a well-balanced mix of fertile soil, compost, and materials like sand, perlite, peat moss, and others.

Lemon trees feed heavily and need a lot of energy. Nutrients required by lemon trees are classified as macronutrients and micronutrients. They are both essential, but macronutrients are needed in large quantities, and lemon trees require additional application of these components, while micronutrients are needed in small amounts. If you find you need to increase the acidity and drainage of your homemade citrus potting soil, you can simply mix in some sand. There are many “right” ways to make a citrus potting mix, but all good methods start with understanding the needs of the plant. Agric Water Manag 125:92–104. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.agwat.2013.03.024 Rich organic ingredients – The Miracle-Gro mix contains high-quality organic components like compost that provide optimal nutrition for citrus trees without chemical additives. Loam soils are a mix of both clay and sandy soils, along with other organic materials. Generally, loamy soils are both loose and rich enough to clump up when wet but still break apart easily. The goal for a citrus tree’s potting soil is to have a rich, well-draining, loamy soil, with a pH of 6.0-7.0. While this can seem like a lot of garden-jargon, it’s much simpler than it seems. Let’s break it down.

The values of crop coefficient were obtained by the combination of two vegetation indices, NDVI and NDWI, the first of which is representative of the plant vigor and vegetative fraction; relatively higher tree canopy coverage increases the plant transpiration component, while lower values determine its decrease. Higher basal crop coefficient, K cb, associated with the fraction cover is consistent with the methodology proposed by Allen and Peeira ( 2009) and Pereira et al. ( 2020) allowing the evaluation of K cb from the fraction of ground cover and plant height. On the other hand, irrigation frequency should mainly affect the temporal dynamic of the stress coefficient K s and not the values of K cb. Keep in mind that you’ll likely need to adjust your watering schedule as your citrus tree will likely require much less water. Ensure there’s proper drainage so the water doesn’t stagnate. Iron is involved in some photosynthetic and respiratory enzyme systems. It acts as a catalyst in the production of chlorophyll. Agron J 74:967–971. https://doi.org/10.2134/agronj1982One of the best citrus potting mixes that I’ve found is one with equal parts sand, peat moss, perlite, and compost. They each have different benefits for the soil and provide a great supply of nutrients, aeration, and water retention for the tree.
