Fei Wang is the fashion illustrator and artist behind the sartorial fictional character Mr Slowboy. Based in London with his family, the Beijing-born artist recently released his first book, Mr Slowboy; a retrospective of 6 years of illustrations. We caught up with Mr Slowboy to find out more about his practice. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us, Fei. For the blog readers that don’t know you, can you tell us a little about yourself and your work?

He planned a brunch on Sunday with Elie, at FLOR, the only "decent Mexican restaurant in Paris" according to them... of course. I think it is nice when other brands recognise and appreciate your work. For example recently some car and watch brands approached me. If their subject or item fit my style or if the project is fashion related I would work with them. I wouldn’t do a project with a brand that either has nothing to do with fashion or if it is completely different from my aesthetics. Tell us a bit about the process. How long does a typical illustration take to draw and what techniques do you use? I also like to think that it is like Simpson. You know, Mr Slowboy now becomes a specific world. When you get into it, you become a pert of it too. And what would you say is the important aspect of the brand when you choose which one to work with? Tell us a bit about yourself and the journey that has led you to becoming an established illustrator. They are especially proud of their bedding, as they benefited from a 30% discount on cotton percale during the Merci Days! Claudia stretches, her slightly crumpled Merci sheets made of soft cotton gauze, a subtle mixture of Batignolles Yellow, Marais Blue and Gris Fusain, testify to the nocturnal excitement… Baby N°2 doesn't sleep through the night yet.I drew inspiration from all sort of visual sources, from the caricatures of Vanity Fair from late 19th century and Tintin of Hergé to Indian miniature paintings and Japanese Ukiyo-e as well as some influence from Chinese ink painting, but the initial idea of “Slowboy” was inspired and influenced by the “Ivy Boys” created by the great Japanese illustrator Mr Kazuo Hozumi, who also wrote the foreword to my recently published book “Mr Slowboy: Portraits of the Modern Gentleman”.

In closing, the collection serves up a series of bags, each of which is designed for the on-the-go. A 24-liter holdall can be attached to the front of the collaborative bike, as can a new wax city bag, which boasts brass hardware and leather trims. At the end something I like to ask people I talk to. What does style mean? How do you understand it? At The Edwardian Manchester, McCor was inspired by the landscape, designs, and scenery around him, including the hotel’s mix of modern and Victorian architecture which he brought to life and captured from a new perspective with his signature brand of illustrative photographic art and humour. Go behind the scenes on YouTube below. You have a very distinct style of drawing — What’s the process been like to build this strong visual identity? As a Correspondent for this legendary Northwestern US daily newspaper, he has an endless sense of curiosity.

It is also about knowing what a good product is, what quality means. So if you choose glasses you need to know what glass is the best, similarly with architecture and design. You have to be able to understand why those things are the best, what aspect makes it of high quality. It will definitely help you having good taste. Style might differ but every stylish person has a good taste that is common to others in the same or other fields too. It doesn’t necessary mean that only a person who can afford high quality garments can be stylish. The first collaborations will launch in the UK with two artists who have achieved worldwide recognition and attracted large communities to their social media channels thanks to their highly imaginative work. These artists include the photographer Rich McCor, better known as Paperboyo, and Fei Wang, contemporary artist and Chinese illustrator known under the pseudonym of Mr.Slowboy. There’s also tees for men and women donning illustrations by Fei Wang, a.k.a. Mr Slowboy that depict cycling in the city, as well as a holdall, city bag and pouch crafted from Barbour’s signature fabric and that have also been designed to specially fit on the bike.

Everything is drawn on paper by hand, most often with colour pens. Then I scan them into the computer. Sometimes a little touch up is necessary but most of the work is done on paper. I draw some inspiration from Japanese illustrator Hozumi Kazuo, famous mens fashion illustrator renewedfor his work for Men’s Club magazine. I also like the old Vanity Fair magazine pictures and Indian miniature painting. Elie looks good even when he wakes up, in his bathrobe, bought on rue de la paix in this great Maison that also makes his shirts. There are two aspects here, I think. One would be theprestige or exclusivity of the fabric/tailor/brand and the other, more important, would be how this particular item suits me.
