David Robert Mitchell’s synthy, supernatural thriller is tailor-made for franchising and over-explanation: After having sex with a cursed young man, Jay (Maika Monroe) is stalked by a shape-shifting, demonlike entity whose purpose ... is never communicated. “It” just wants to kill the new infected target. Then the person before them. Then the next person in the viral chain. The only escape is passing the malicious force on through intercourse — an ethical quagmire. Set in a muted-hue version of Spielberg’s suburbia and invested in the teen perspective (as opposed to straight up slaughtering co-eds), It Follows is a tiny masterpiece, joyfully un-sequeled and unknown, that will have you looking over your shoulders as soon as the credits roll. —Matt Patches Paranormal Productions: Fire Set: Go to the fire set and defeat the ghosts. The plot is thin, the twist doesn’t make any sense, and the scares aren’t at all scary, but Fantasy Island is still endearing because everyone looks like they’re having a lot of fun. Particularly delightful to watch are Jimmy O. Yang ( Silicon Valley, Space Force) and Ryan Hansen ( Veronica Mars, Party Down), who should be cast as brothers in everything from now on. Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Dan works at a primate research facility where he’s trying to make apes smarter. It’s working with one ape named Caesar, who Dan takes home. This Caesar is smarter than the one in the real Apes, but less intent on freedom. The Monster Fighters line definitely had a lot of really cool and creepy builds, many of which are perfect for Halloween. Though the line is probably best known for its buildings, some of those incredibly creepy builds were actually vehicles. If you’re a Halloween fan, you really can’t miss out on this hearse. With some pretty clear influences lifted from both The Munsters and Rob Zombie, this vehicle both stands out as an incredibly modern piece of the line and as one that is well-suited for Halloween decor. It’s not exactly scary, but it fits in with any kind of spooky aesthetic that you might want to create. Below are the walkthrough sections and objectives. The writer-director does not possess a high- or low-brow barometer. As far as Us and Get Out are concerned, there’s only a mission to provoke, stir, wake, and mesmerize the audience by any and every means necessary. He succeeds by layering on mystery and pushing his ensemble to a physical and mental brink. At a time when most movies divest in intelligence to cater to (then lose out on) the largest audience imaginable, Peele instead prioritizes ideas to make a terrifying, enthralling horror movie for all of us. Cabin in the Woods, is by far one of my favorite horror movies, simply because it dumps horror tropes on its head, in a good way. So when I came across this lego set, I immediately knew I had to add it to my horror Lego sets. Add a couple of little pumpkins and boom. Spook city. The Hidden Side theme continues to be an excellent source of scares for builders, especially with this train set. There’s something inherently spooky about older-style trains, and LEGO really leverages that with a few extra action features and some accessories to make a legitimately frightening toy. It comes with a few mini-figures and some nice accessories, making it not only a great spooky toy but one that’s a must-have for anyone who is serious about collecting all the parts of this theme. It might usually be filed under “comedy”, but no TV show is as well steeped in the horror genre as Inside No. 9. There was the Hammer camp of “ The Harrowing” starring Helen McCrory as a glamorous vampire, the paranormal freakiness of “Séance Time” with its child haunting, the horrific twist of Krampus-themed 1970s homage “The Devil of Christmas”, master horror hoax “Deadline” which posed as a live episode before things started to go very, very wrong… and most recently, “ The Bones of St Nicholas”, a Christmas-set ghost story that would make M.R. James cry for his mummy. The Amityville Horror: Pervy priest blesses the house while pooping, and flies cover his face, as happens to the priest in The Amityville Horror.That’s not to say the people in Alice’s life does the same, however. Everything from director William Friedkin’s use of light and shadow to stellar performances from Max von Sydow, Linda Blair, and Ellen Burstyn works together to create a sense of dread that’s punctuated by some truly gnarly special effects. Sure, revisiting it in 2020 probably won’t cause you to vomit or pass out like audiences notoriously did when it was released (though that was definitely played up as a marketing stunt.) but the slow burn terror is still disorienting and spooky. The Exorcist is a product of its time but it totally holds up.
I don’t know why, but the Scooby Doo lighthouse gives me The Fog vibes. My son has loved Scooby Doo since he was way little, so every time we bust this out I get a little misty. It’s a super fun build, we all have a blast, and it’s a great addition to any horror Lego set. There are few shows out there that are able to combine horror and romance without losing something from each genre, and Mike Flanagan’s sophomore Netflix series The Haunting of Bly Manoris one of them. The Haunting of Bly Manor doesn’t wimp out on scares nor does the relationship between Dani (Victoria Pedretti) and Jamie (Amelia Eve) feel cheesy or forced – instead the ghost stories and love story are intertwined into a single compelling narrative. The Ghostbusters movies all straddle the line between spooky and funny and tend to do so in a way that really allows fans of all ages to enjoy the films. If you’re looking for a good Halloween theme that’s still going to be fun for everyone, this build might be the one for which you are looking. Based on the more recent film in the franchise, this build features both the ECTO-1 ambulance and the ECTO-2 motorcycle, as well as the full cast of heroes from the film. The Evil Dead series is a cult favorite, and Evil Dead 2 is, for my money, the best of the bunch. Raimi indulges all of his irreverent, surreal sensibilities. If the idea of a man’s hand becoming possessed so he chops it off with a chainsaw and then attaches said chainsaw to the bloody stump so he can kill demons with it appeals to you, Evil Dead 2 is a hell of a fun time.
The Blair Witch Project: Ghostface chases attention-hungry TV reporter Gail Hailstorm (Cheri Oteri) into the woods, where she turns the camera on her face (and her snot faucet of a nose) to record her last words. The terror of Cam is not jump scares or gore. What makes Cam scarier than so much other horror is that it leaves its protagonist out to dry. The movie makes you believe that our heroine may not win this fight because there is no one who actually wants her to come out on top. It confronts the genre’s longtime statement on who gets to live and die by creating a whole new set of rules in which the sexual woman finally prevails.I’d also be remiss if I didn’t recommend the 2006 remake starring Nicolas Cage as the doomed policeman, which is an absolute mess of a film but features this iconic scene. The Grudge: Much of the weirdness in the house stems from the dead little ghost boy who lives there. Solving the mystery of the cursed little freak occupies much of Cindy’s time in the movie.
