The answer is to shoot heavier pellets. This keeps the report quieter and – with Baracuda Match pellets – gave the best accuracy, too. I got to spend a lot of quality time with this rifle over the past four weeks. It’s been out on my bench in the garden range at least half a dozen times, and I’ve also taken it with me on a couple of rabbit hunts at two different perms. This rifle features an adjustable two-stage trigger, which took a bit of getting used to. The factory setting as it comes straight out of the box is quite spongey and it almost feels like a single-stage trigger, but with a little adjustment I managed to set it just how I like it, with around 2.5lb of pull weight. The main performance claim made by the manufacturer is that it achieves the obligatory 1,000 FPS Muzzle Velocity with 7.0 Grain pellets in .177 caliber. The Emerge tested by HAM certainly met that claim. In fact, it exceeded it by producing 1.025 FPS with 7.0 Grain RWS Hobby pellets.

A measure of gas pressure used for air rifles. One bar is equal to 1.02 kiloponds per square centimeter (kp/cm²). Gas pressure is also measured in pounds per square inch (psi). One bar equals 14.5036 psi.This means that – if you normally shoot at a specific range – you can set this 4 x 32 bundled airgun scope to give its best performance at that distance. This can be an useful benefit for this scope, although not all bundled scopes can do it (and maybe not all the scopes bundled with the Umarex Emerge). Note that Umarex USA is very unlikely to approve of this modification. So you didn’t hear about it from HAM, especially if you mess-up the adjustment! Umarex was originally founded in Germany in 1972 and grew the company by acquiring or licensing some of the most respected and recognized brands of air guns in the industry. Their North American subsidiary, Umarex USA, was established in 2006 after acquiring American marketers of more well-known brands. The company now has their own in-house brands for beginners and mid-level airsoft enthusiasts with Tactical Force and Combat Zone. Their top-level brand is Elite Force, which caters to the most demanding customers. Now, Umarex USA sells over 30 brands of air guns from entry level models to the most high powered air rifles available. Before I even entertained the idea of taking it out hunting, I made sure it was up to the job, smashing five mag’s of four different pellets down the range at 20 metres to find out how accurate it is and which pellets it prefers. It was a close call between the JSB Exact and Air Arms Diabolo Field, but the JSB just pipped it with some very good ½-inch groupings. There was only the odd flyer, after fine-tuning with another five mag’s of Exacts, and even those were minimal, so I was more than confident enough to take it out into the field on the rabbits. In addition, the HAM Team did find a couple of issues associated with using the magazine in the test gun.

As predicted, the rifle performed very well out in the field, taking three rabbits during one evening session. There were no misses, and all three kills were clean and instant. More than enough proof that the 850 M2 is up to the job.This is because the Emerge is well-balanced for off-hand shooting. The HAM Team found that it shoots well using the “Artillery hold”, with a minimum of grip on the forend. (See the photograph below). This is just the sort of upgrade HAM recommends for any Emerge owner wanting to improve the practical accuracy and durability of his or her air rifle.

If you live in a state or city where air guns are treated as firearms you may be able to take advantage of our FFL special program. Maximum Muzzle Energy approached 17 Ft/Lbs with the lightest pellets. Also – interestingly – with the mid-weight JSB 8.44 Grain domes, as you can see from the table below. Yes, there are PCP rifles out there for similar money, but for CO2 lovers this Umarex 850 M2 is a massive step up in terms of quality, accuracy and performance. Not only that, it’s really easy to shoot and extremely good fun, to boot. It’s the ideal gift for our younger shooters and for those just getting into the sport, as well as seasoned shooters who fancy a play with something a little different to the norm. When you open that box and see all the goodies inside, it’s like opening a birthday present – there’s just so much to go at. Once identified, this issue was easily corrected by deliberately mis-aligning the markers when re-attaching the face plate, as the photograph below shows. This means that it offers strong value from a price/features perspective. However, we also need to consider the other attributes that it offers, like power, consistency and accuracy. We’ll do that in this test review. One thing that may be worth noting is that that the rear of that rear sight leaf is VERY close to the front of the magazine assembly!

As you can see, the Umarex Emerge has plenty of room to accept installing even a fairly long scope as this, without causing loading issues. That’s a benefit that is not shared by all breakbarrel air rifles.It's important to know that due to state and local laws, there are certain restrictions for various products. The Emerge is supplied with a typical Umarex owner’s manual. It’s well illustrated, good quality, multi-lingual and with plenty of illustrations. These items normally require Identification (Passport) or a firearms / Shotgun certificate before they are handed over. Shotguns, Rifles, Airguns and Moderators are usually good examples. When purchasing an “Only available in store” item you are in effect paying a deposit for your goods. In most instances you can choose to collect your item from our store or if It's a firearm you can collect it from a 3rd party gun dealer. The latter may be at an additional cost to yourself. There are yet more goodies inside the box in the form of an Umarex K3 Neo silencer, which screws down on the 1/2”-20 UNF muzzle thread beautifully. It really does make a difference to the sound output from this rifle, and I’m glad that Umarex has included it in the kit – if you’re going to take this rifle out on the rabbits, the silencer will definitely give you an edge.
