While sheltering in Dark Hollow, our rabbit heroes have some time to kill. While exploring the dark corners of the previously abandoned warren, Podkin stumbles upon one of the twelve gifts. As Brigid said, the balance in the world always tries to find a way to restore itself. Now that the Gorm are growing stronger by the day, it seems the goddess’ gifts are growing stronger too. The Gorm also seem to realize this, which is why they’re so determined to destroy the gifts once and for all. When the rabbits learn of another hidden gift, it’s a race to find the gift that might tip the balance in our heroes’ favor.It feels like the protagonists come out on top maybe a little bit too easy in the end. Everything leading up to it is set up quite well though, so it all does make sense. Podkin’s world has been taken over by a race of evil iron-covered rabbits called the Gorm. When they come to his warren one Bramblemas Eve, he finds himself running for his life and fighting to survive. The Legend of Podkin One-Ear’ won the Blue Peter Book Award 2017, the Prix Sorcieres 2019, was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2018 and nominated for the Carnegie Award 2018. It has also been optioned for television. Illustration by David Wyatt The Gift of Dark Hollow The book sets up what I’m hoping to be another trilogy perfectly with lots of twists and turns along the way. The familiar cut aways to The Bard and Rue are just as exciting. I love how these parts of the story have just as much adventure as the main act. In my opinion this is Pook’s best book, I love how both stories begin to entwine and we receive the story from the past and the present. In the last chapter it begins to feel that there is more emphasis on Rue and his feelings, is this him beginning to mature – It would be great to hear him telling parts of the next story. I really like that there are strong messages on bullying, being different and friendship that are told through the outcasts. All of the rabbits have suffered bullying in some form. Exiled for their differences, it is their differences that bind these three warriors together and as the adventure becomes more fraught with dangers so the their friendship grows in strength.

Divno bi bilo sjesti uz vatru i upijati riječi kojima mudri bard pripovijeda legendu o Podkinu Jednouhom, baš kao što su tu čast imali radoznali i puni pitanja mladi zečevi. Kieran Larwood svojim pisanjem stvorio je tu intimnu i opojnu atmosferu, kao da slušamo barda, koja bi bila postojana duž cijelog romana, da oni isti maleni zečevi mjestimično nisu bili iznimno naporni s hrpetinom podpitanja. Een verrassend leuk verhaal en zeker in Nederland zeldzaam in zijn soort. Echt de moeite waard. Hopelijk laat het vervolg van deze trilogie niet te lang op zich wachten. Zowel mijn dochter van 9 als mijn zoon van 6 kunnen zo lang echt niet wachten! Uki is very different to Podkin, an outcast who earns your sympathy straight away as opposed to the spoilt rich chieftain’s son who you slowly grow to love. Uki and his mother are demonised in their village. Kieran cleverly uses the first chapters to point out the pettiness of discrimination.
