About this deal

By the way, I still have a few spaces left on my next Wedding PJ Workshop in London, and the Wedding & Social Documentary workshop I'm running with Fujifilm Switzerland in Luassane in May.

This is where this series of lenses really shines. The 23mm f/2 WR and and 35mm f/2 WR have both had some of the best autofocus performance on the Fuji X System, and the 50mm f/2 is on par, if not faster. In good light, you will see focusing that outperforms some DSLR lenses. Tested against my Nikkor 58mm f/1.4 on the D750, I couldn't notice any difference in focusing speed. If anything, the Fujifilm was a touch faster. You can see videos of those compared through the viewfinder in my article from last week.

As for the corners, both the 50mm and 56mm are very sharp straight out of the gate (though not as sharp as in the centre) whereas the 60mm is most definitely softer. The Fujifilm 50mm F2 really is a Gem. And I'm not just saying that. There are aspects of the 35mm F2 that I don't like and also the 23mm F2. I'm really not a fan of the 14mm, nor the 16mm for the type of work I shoot ~ so I'm not just pulling a line here. Besides being an extremely handsome lens, the Fuji XF 50 mm f/2 is solidly built and feels great in the hand. I particularly like its size and scale. With my left palm cradling my X-T2, my thumb and middle finger can conveniently adjust the aperture ring, and I can comfortably use my thumb and index finger to focus the lens manually when needed. The tension on the focus ring is very smooth. There is also a noticeable distance when you rotate the aperture ring from f/16 to A. This helps avoid accidentally shifting the camera into fully automatic mode from aperture priority or to manual mode from shutter priority. The manual focus ring sits comfortably between thumb and forefinger. It has a smooth and silent glide with just the right amount of resistance. TheFujifilm 50mm f2 R WR has fantastic image quality that really, truly speaks for itself. There isn’t a single reason for photographers to complain. It’s sharp, has nice bokeh, doesn’t suffer from any sort of issues the 23mm f2 suffers from when it comes to image quality, and most importantly it’s got great colors. When using the Fujifilm system, it’s honestly tough to complain about the colors anyway. Bokeh

Really, it depends on your need. For example, I'm not going to sell my 56mm lens and it will still travel with me to every wedding. Here in the UK, the venues are dark and the weather is often dingy. I rely on the 1.2 aperture in low light. The F2 aperture of the new Fujifilm 50mm will not cut it in those cases (even though, as it's lighter, I can probably get away with a slower hand held shutter speed). What’s there to say about theFujifilm 50mm f2 R WR: well, it’s an interesting choice for sure. I personally would have liked a 56mm option to be a proper portrait lens, but the 50mm option gives a bit more versatility. It’s a great lens for street photography for sure if you’re looking to give a bit more distance to you and your subject. For that reason, I really recommend it for street photographers and street portraiture. Studio shooters have a whole number of other options. The weather sealing and autofocus performance make it well suited to the streets–which is where most Fuji shooters will be going. One of the best things is the reliability of this lens, you’ll be able to surely keep using it in tough weather. When I was testing the Fujifilm 23mm f2 lens, I took it into a super hard rainfall. And so during the 2017 Mermaid day parade, I did pretty much the same thing with the 50 after attaching it to the Fujifilm X Pro 2. This time, it was much more of a torture test. From around 11AM to 1:30PM, it rained. Then it was intermittent throughout the rest of the day until 7pm. Centre sharpness out-resolves corner sharpness at f/2, and the same can be said right through the aperture range to f/11, where the introduction of diffraction starts to soften overall sharpness.

This is an in-depth review of the Fujifilm XF 50mm f/2 R WR lens. Announced in January 2017, the lens is the third in the line of compact, and weather-sealed f/2 lenses made for Fuji’s line of X-series cameras. It joins its XF 23mm and 35mm cousins. This short telephoto (76mm full-frame equivalent) is about half the size and weight of Fujifilm’s 56 mm f/1.2 R lens, and also half the cost! This versatile lens focuses extremely fast so it is excellent not only for portraits and landscapes but also for wedding and street photography.
